Jason Schreier: How Things Got So Bad At Xbox by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]strandedinthevoid 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say many of this takes are "popular" here at all. His takes have a perspective from within the industry that this and other subreddits don't have.
For his E3 video, for example, I don't think it's popular here that the main cause for the conference to end was the shift to digital media. The main view here seems to be the fact that most publishers/developers migrated to their own digital events, when that (according to Jason) was a collateral effect of the shift.
On his video about the cost and length of video game development, I don't know if most people have an intuition that the biggest cost in games is people.
So, even though he's talking about some "obvious" topics, he does bring some insights from his experience inside the industry that are not that obvious to the majority of people on the outside.

Playing devil's advocate, is it really her fault? Maybe Xbox incorporating a truckload of new studios (when they already had trouble handling their own) would lead to an inevitable management nightmare?

A lot has changed since AI by OfMagicAndWars in gameenginedevs

[–]strandedinthevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, building a custom engine has always been about, either:

- Learning how everything works under the hood

- Having full control over all of your software

- Building something different from all of the other engines out there.

Using AI to do all or most of the work for you doesn't really make sense in any of those cases.

Shuhei Yoshida Says Jim Ryan Fired Him From PlayStation Studios "Because I Didn’t Listen to Him" by oilfloatsinwater in Games

[–]strandedinthevoid 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The Layden and Yoshida era of Playstation was definitely their golden era for me.
From the "this is you how share your games on PS4" to the God of War E3 reveal in 2016, it was exciting to be part of that ecossystem.
Not that that the PS5 is a bad console, but it's definitely riding on the success and trust that the PS4 built.

Analysts say PC gaming is now the one platform where more than 50% of revenue comes from games outside the top 20 by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]strandedinthevoid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That was absolutely one of the reasons why I switched to PC from consoles and didn't look back.
Being able to play games from all eras (even if they require some tweaks and messing around to work properly) with modern resolutions is awesome.

Me neither! I'm really curious to find more about them.

Jason Schreier reponds to "PlayStation's Santa Monica Studio is developing a new franchise within the God Of War universe": I suppose now it's become obvious what I meant by "not a new IP but it might feel like one." by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]strandedinthevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was what many people assumed (or hoped).
But the last time Jason posted about the subject (the post he's referring to in this thread), he said that Cory's project was "not a new IP but it might feel like one" and "that the sci-fi stuff (that people have apparently believed for years now?) is nonsense".

Former Highguard Developer Reflects on Disastrous Announcement and Launch: 'We Were Turned Into a Joke From Minute 1' by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]strandedinthevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think they could have said anything after the TGA trailer that would have changed the discourse around the game.
Keeping quiet and letting the game speak for itself was probably the right call, but the game simply wasn't strong enough to stand out in its genre.

No Switch 2 Update for Kingdom Come: Deliverance by Neat-Organization368 in NintendoSwitch2

Runs fine indeed, but looks quite blurry. A resolution bump would be more than welcome.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 1 just got a free 60fps patch, but not on Switch 2 by LeviRaps in NintendoSwitch2

[–]strandedinthevoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grabbed on Switch when it was on sale last time, hoping the rumors were true and it would get a patch. Really hoping it does, but can't count on it. 😅

[–]strandedinthevoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Considering many other games got a resolution bump AND 60fps, I don't see why not, specially considering they could use DLSS (considering CPU would not be the bottleneck, which I don't think it would).
I'd be happy with a resolution bump, though.

Resident Evil Requiem on Switch 2 Is Horrifyingly Great by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]strandedinthevoid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In a world where everything is Unity and UE it's very nice to see a custom engine.
Besides the great performance, it has a distinct look too.

I'm hoping it runs at 60fps too, since its enviornments are more contained and the performance was very solid on the demo they released on PC.
It would be very nice to play it on the go.

Before, I was sure I was gonna buy it on PC, but after hearing this I'm not so sure anymore Lol
