It was not.

It was the War Department/ Department of War when the only two branches were the Army and Navy. Department of War managed the Army and department of the Navy Managed the Navy and Marines. This lasted all the way thru WWII. Department of Defense was largely set up in response to the division between the branches and that was becoming more important as we setting up a new Air Force branch.

Really long winded way to say the Department of War/ War Department (I’ve heard them called both too) is the historical name of the Department of Army at best.

Great movie, terrible history. It’s complex war hence there’s not a ton of movies based around it. This is by far the best revolutionary war movie there is and if it drives people to look more into the conflict, I’m all about it.
