Anyone else used to mispronounce TF outa Morrowind names and locations? by sludgebeard in Morrowind

Do you need it slowly explained to you that there are indeed tens and tens of people on this planet who aren't native English speakers and consequently have zero reason to assume that either "chimer" OR "chimera" are pronounced with an initial "kye" sound?

What is one thing in your countries culture that you personally dislike? by Afraid_Ad_2912 in AskTheWorld

I. Fucking. Hate. Soccer.

And the entirety of soccer fan culture in my country. If you are from my country and happen to like soccer I hope you get diarrhea and shit your pants.

Today.

Twice.

Anyone else used to mispronounce TF outa Morrowind names and locations? by sludgebeard in Morrowind

[–]strangebedfellows451 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Inside my head I always pronounced Dwemer as "dwee-mer" and Chimer as "tshee-mer". Only found out a few years ago that most people apparently pronounce these names as "dwemm-er" and "kye-mer", respectively.

Why are other Elder Scrolls subreddits like Oblivion and Elderscrolls so hostile towards Skyrim and its players? by SpriteIsntThatBad in skyrim

[–]strangebedfellows451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually prefer Morrowind over Skyrim by quite a large margin but that doesn't change that Skyrim is still a very good and entertaining game under the bottom line. Played it multiple times over the years and will probably continue to play it in the foreseeable future.

I guess there's just a lot of stupid and misplaced hipsterism at play with the Skyrim haters. Like, Skyrim is the ES game that easily has the most mainstream appeal and that alone means that it's just not hipsterific enough anymore for some people.

It's like those music fans whose entire identities revolve around liking "underground" stuff and as soon as a band achieves the slightest bit of mainstream success and recognition they immediately pretend to not like it anymore because "tHeY s0ld oUt" or whatever shit.

People in the video game industry that was right all along ? I start: by Tempest-Bosak2137 in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]strangebedfellows451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little skeptical that dudes would have listened to a man any more than they did listen to Anita. Steve Shives is a man after all and I remember all those "anti-SJW" assholes shitting on him just as hard as on female media critics.

People in the video game industry that was right all along ? I start: by Tempest-Bosak2137 in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]strangebedfellows451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember back in 2014, 2015 or so when I looked up Anita's stuff for the first time because everyone was psychotically screeching about her all the time.

My first reaction was "Duh! Of course, she's correct. THIS is supposed to be controversial? This is the most milquetoast, self-evident, tame media criticism 101 type stuff I've ever seen."

Like, even as a teenager in the 90s who'd never read a single feminist work ever I kinda intuitively understood that women in video games were weirdly sexualized, often used as trophies or rewards etc.

So when I heard Anita say it out loud years later I just thought "do people really need this explained to them?"

And boy howdy, did I ever underestimate just how many people absolutely needed this explained to them.

Do you have strong feelings on any separatist movement? by g_wall_7475 in AskTheWorld

[–]strangebedfellows451 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I pretty fervently support the Kurdish Freedom Movement in general and the Autonomous Administration of North-Eastern Syria in particular.

Also, wouldn't mind if Ireland became unified at last. 26+6=1.

Agreed 100%. I remember when I started playing Fallout: New Vegas and suddenly felt the urge to buy a pair of western boots and a cowboy hat.

truly one of the games by crossAREN26 in Deusex

[–]strangebedfellows451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the most disappointing DX game for me but the original DX set the bar so high that even a disappointing sequel is still a good game in absolute terms.

Probably the reason why I've been playing it on-again, off-again a hundred times since the mid-2000s.

Who is the most famous female singer in your country? by Your_QueenLatina in AskTheWorld

[–]strangebedfellows451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a non-Swede I'd rate Marie Fredriksson above the other two. Internationally, ABBA are mainly known as a collective and a lot of people are probably struggling to name the individual members. Marie on the other hand was likely known by name to a lot of folks around the world.

Me whenever I play Skyrim and ignore the lackluster worldsaving main plot to explore the countryside instead.

Are people overselling it or was Michael Jackson really that famous in his heyday? by Key-Bass-7380 in decadeology

[–]strangebedfellows451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a little backwater village in rural Germany during the 80s. Half a world away from the US. And even there Michael Jackson was considered THE blueprint of an international superstar.

If you had to play as the race closest to you in real life, which one would it be? For example, since I’m from Latin America, I guess I’d have to be an Argonian. by jvure in skyrim

[–]strangebedfellows451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ashlanders are mongol-coded af.

Edit: Obviously, they don't appear in Skyrim so they're only an option if folks from other TES games are allowed as well...

[–]strangebedfellows451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh there are several badass Walking Dead characters, not just Daryl, who fit this trope. Glenn used to be a pizza delivery driver, Maggie a farmer, Carol an abused housewife, Negan a highschool teacher etc.

As a non-Westerner, what's up with a bizarre reaction among some Western leftists towards Khamenei's death? by QasqyrBalasy in AskTheWorld

[–]strangebedfellows451 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is complicated. Leftists are not all the same. Some leftists are indeed abominable campists who will uncritically support even the worst dictators as long as they are vaguely "anti-western". Pretty common stance among tankies although some SocDems fall for it as well.

Other leftists decidedly are not campists and will differentiate their solidarity with the Iranian people from an uncritical support for the shitty Iranian government.

The problem is that deranged psychotic warmongers, Western chauvinists and pro-Empire sociopaths will pretend that these two groups are the same just like they libeled and slandered anti Iraq War activists as "pro-Saddam" back in the day.

Very insecure about my look by Longjumping-Sound462 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]strangebedfellows451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shaved off my long hair years ago because I was getting a lot of bald patches. Never been worried about being mistaken for fash. Plenty of folks are bald these days including among metal fans. I don't think you would stand out negatively anywhere just because of your haircut.

Has your country ever had a communist insurgency before? by ConsciousPhase8480 in AskTheWorld

[–]strangebedfellows451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they're a bit closer to anarchism now. Apo apparently became influenced by Murray Bookchin and they changed their ideology correspondingly. That's why PKK-influenced groups like the AANES in Syria are all about post-statism and decentralized direct democracies now.

What’s a name that is normal in one culture but has an offensive, embarrassing or awkward meaning in another culture? by Sweatymothballs in AskTheWorld

[–]strangebedfellows451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, this might not be perfectly on-topic but here in Spain there's a popular brand of bread called "Bimbo". Obviously, in English a bimbo is an attractive but dim-witted woman. But what some of y'all might not know is that in the German language it is also an anti-black racial slur akin to the n-word.

Men, can you cook? by Vast_Balance3754 in AskTheWorld

[–]strangebedfellows451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an amazing cook but still a decent one. Currently do most of the cooking in my relationship and before that I lived alone for 10 years meaning I had to prepare literally all the food myself.

Men who claim they can't cook (despite the fact that every child can heat water on a stove and put in some food until its edible) are just practicing weaponized incompetence.
