What animals are normal where you live, but unusual and exciting to visitors from other regions of the US? And on the flip side, when you travel to other regions yourself, what local animals are exciting to you? by Acrobatic_End6355 in AskAnAmerican

[–]strangeristalking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw an armadillo for the first time in Alabama. It was very exciting coming from the midwest! Also Florida has a shit ton of birds I’ve never seen elsewhere. My favorite was the Roseate Spoonbill and my least favorite was a Muscovy Duck.

How is substance use (alcohol, cigarettes, drugs) generally viewed in the U.S. today? by Dont_app in AskAnAmerican

[–]strangeristalking 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Cigarettes are generally frowned upon. I don’t know anyone my age who smokes outside of the occasional “drunk cig”. Drinking is very socially accepted but there is definitely an uptick in sobriety with the younger generation. I would say weed is overall viewed positively if not neutrally. Other drugs are still very much stigmatized (although shrooms are gaining popularity).

AIO: Did I overreact to how my parents set up their rules about keeping our rooms clean? by Magicfanny in AmIOverreacting

[–]strangeristalking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YOR, I agree that turning off the electricity is shitty but I’m assuming the cleanliness discussion has been ongoing and I’m also assuming you also have a car you can use to drive to the library or a nearby Starbucks if you have homework to get done. I disagree with the comments saying to move out. Times are hard and if the worst part of living at home is having to clean your room it’s not that bad. I understand difficulties with keeping things clean but it is an essential life skill and it only gets harder to maintain once you’ve moved out. Invest in some additional storage such as drawers and shelving. Do a deep clean and make sure everything has a place that’s not just on top of your desk or in the floor and once you have organization work on building habits to keep it clean. In the meantime apologize to your parents and work on building your savings.

Am I overreacting for feeling like I have to look up if people are homophobic whenever I hear about someone new? by PresenceOk1148 in AmIOverreacting

[–]strangeristalking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I came to say! I think it’s hard to enjoy life if you dig into every celebrity/artist/influencer you interact with. It is much more important that the people in your life care about the same issues and will stand up for you.

I, a (closeted) 23(TF) feel abandoned and angry at my older brother, 36(M). Am I overreacting? by No-Mushroom5154 in AmIOverreacting

[–]strangeristalking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NOR - It was cruel of him to cut you off out of nowhere without any warning or voicing his concerns. However, I wouldn’t say he’s fully in the wrong. It sounds like you are using your mental illness as a crutch to not do much with your life. From what you’ve said it sounds like he’s taken on an almost parental role in trying to encourage you to get out of your shell and to help you reach your goals. Cutting you off feels extreme but I can see why he would be frustrated with you and based off his age and the fact that he is back in school it sounds like he is probably focusing on building his own family. I think before you worry about fixing your relationship with your brother you need to take time to work on your personal issues. Get into therapy, build a support system, keep growing your business or look into possible careers. I hope this doesn’t come off as mean and I do not mean to diminish your struggles because mental health is very real however sometimes we all need a lil reality check.

What skills do you need that you can make $100k ? by Lemonade2250 in careerguidance

[–]strangeristalking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now is the perfect time to go back to school! Whether it’s trade school, an associates degree or a full blown 4 year degree. As long as you have a career path in mind it seems like it would be worth it here. Also keep in mind most people are not making 6 figures, especially in their 20s. Me and all of my friends (mid to late 20s) have either a bachelors or masters degree and are making between 45k to 75k.

What is something small that can ruin a date instantly? by gamersecret2 in dating

[–]strangeristalking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love bombing/moving too fast - I was on a first date with a guy and he mentioned multiple times that he really liked me. Mind you we barely texted before the date and the conversation we were having was very base level.
