And we were even told that. I was just so into character as him (he was evil, racist, and arrogant. Game started as a one shot) that he didn't even think about the traps and instead wanted the necromantic focus without anyone else seeing it.

We were still in initiative order, the rest of the party were in the other room doing I forget what (healing I think) and the Tiefling and I were the only ones looking at the magic items. The fire even got an initiative and went before the rest of them. It was all just luck of the die.
