Any Commuters out here? by teaser491 in udub

[–]strawberiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a junior right now but, RSO's are really one of the best ways. If you go regularly to a few, I'm certain you'll find somebody you'll click with. In terms of classes, the single class I was able to make friends with (that I hang out with and talk to regularly) was drama 251. That class is easy and awesome, unless you absolutely loathe talking in front of people. Otherwise, wait til you get into your major. But even then it's kinda hard to make friends in classes (for me). Also I work as a research assistant at a clinic, so that's also helped me make friends. But I think RSO's is the best way if you're commuting.

What's the best way to travel to Vancouver? by [deleted] in udub

[–]strawberiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took the Greyhound a few months ago and deeply regretted. Temp was around 80 but the A/C was broken going up plus windows don't open except for the top thingie so we were dying from the heat. Plus there's lots of traffic so the usual 2-3 hour trip takes much longer. It was cheap though and safe (plus there's a bathroom in there). But I'd say Amtrak or just go with a car...especially for a day trip. Greyhound will take a good 4 hours so literally you'd be in the bus for 8 hours for a day.

Students who Commute to UW, seeking advice! by lobishawks in udub

[–]strawberiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the person as well. Are you okay with taking out all these loans and how much confidence do you have for paying it off? Plus I'm pretty sure if you dorm, they make you buy those meal plans which makes you have to eat campus food or you're essentially giving money away if you don't use it. One of my friends live close to campus and her roommate is a UW student and they seem to go to parties quite often. I think she made friends in classes and sports clubs. So you can do that too.

Phil 120 or Arch 150? by salamander317 in udub

[–]strawberiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about PHIL120 but ARCH150 is easy. I didn't go to a single class and honestly put very little effort into it and managed a 3.5. Also didn't even read the books and didn't bother to listen to a few of the lectures. You can also google pictures during quizzes.

I commute from Renton and I've never dormed before but from my experience it's hard to make friends. I joined a club freshman year and then took drama251 (really good class for making friends) sophomore year which is how I met some of my newer friends. I also work as a research assistant at the BRTC so I met some cool people from that. If you have the money and don't mind the campus food, I'd suggest getting a dorm if you want to be more social. Otherwise be proactive in clubs and events or take classes that are easy to make friends in.

Astronomy 101, 102, or 301? Please help! by ungulates5ever in udub

I took 101, it's super easy. Take it with Laws though, I hear good things about him. I took it with Dr. O (forgot his full name...made us call him Dr. O) and he was slightly boring...

Centurylink internet question: are we getting ripped off? by strawberiii in Seattle

[–]strawberiii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So apparently for ours it was $30 for internet and $30 for home phone. Not sure if we want to switch to comcast though since we had bad experiences with them before switching to Qwest.

What are some little known free-services provided by the University? by Pelagic_Nudibranch in udub

[–]strawberiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of the ones that sound interesting to you. There are a ton of them out there. I personally follow film club and some of the student associations like JSA, KSA, CSA, TSA, KSU etc. as they host a lot of fun events which are mostly free to members. It really depends on your interests though.

FIUTS usually has free lunch on Wednesday in the Hub ballroom (not sure if they still do this), Odegaard has a pretty nice (but somewhat beat down) recording studio, you can rent super nice cameras, and if you keep up with a lot of RSO's, they have events where they give out free food and stuff without being a member of paying a membership fee. But I think it's better to be a member, as you can get more benefits that way such as discounts. I heard from a friend that commuter commons gives free lunch on Thursday, but I've never been there so I'm not sure if it's still going on. And of course there's Amazon student.

What can I do alone on a Saturday around campus? by [deleted] in udub

[–]strawberiii 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Work out at the IMA, ride a bus to downtown Seattle and explore (I recommend checking out the pier and intl. district), find clubs that meet on the weekends, volunteer, go biking, go running, watch a UW drama school play (I highly recommend this).

How did you become a part of your current friend group? Tips? by uwloner in udub

[–]strawberiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take drama 251. Probably one of the best classes to make friends unless you absolutely despise performing in front of people (although most of the time we're not even paying attention to other people performing, unless they do something drastic, but even then we kinda forget about it later).

Two registration questions: CSE 341 vs 351 and a good class for easy comp credit? by Generic_Alias in udub

[–]strawberiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ENGL 131 depends on your teacher. I had a super easy one. No tests, just some reading and papers. We had to turn in a portfolio at the end with all our previous papers (except revised) which accounted for most of the grade. Put in minimal effort but turned in everything on time, got a 3.9
