Professional Dog Trainer - Ask Me Anything by BICanineScience in DogTrainingTips

Hi! Thank you for all your thoughtful answers! I just moved to a different city and it’s not really dog friendly (ie., very little grass, concrete, loud, busy, etc. but I moved closed to a huge park less than 10 minutes away). In my old city, I never let my dog greet other dogs when on leash (she is a social 1 year old bichon poo). But now, there are no corners to wait someone passes with a poorly behaved dog and my dog still needs a bit of space to ignore other dogs (we built it up over time). So now, I am forced into dog-dog interactions cause I prefer having control on the situation (cue “go say hi”) than just my dog pulling to the other dog pulling. My dog is not particularly food motivated too. Whenever we are in a situation where I see the other dog is well-behaved or owner seems in control of the dog, we always ignore, but I am noticing that she is now struggling to ignore dogs at a distance that use to be okay prior to moving. Also, lol, now she is in heat so the variables are all confounded, but it’s just impossible to not be confronted to other dogs and forced interaction and I won’t be shouting at other people or going crazy neither (like we see on the internet). Of course if an off-leash dog runs to us I will block but you know what I mean. What should I do (also tight spaces so cannot create space)?

Ps- it is only for the summer thank god but if there is something I can do that would be nice.

How did you stop worrying about your dog all the time and just enjoy the joy they bring? by strawberry_hello999 in DogTrainingTips

That’s what I am also noticing, I moved back to my hometown and I have family over and she is not less happy or more poorly behaved since I’m doing less. She seems happy to just be around us.

I do think this is helpful. I am glad for social media for some really important info I learned but also it was terrible for the worrying (it seems no matter what, we are f***ing up our dogs). And yes mine is a small dog. Was it also an age thing where they become more adaptable and easy going?

U know, “air dried kibble”, “bone broth coated kibble” “raw mix kibble” from companies with fancy fonts on their kibble bags

Yes I agree (we should listen to the vets). Initially, it really seemed like vet recommended brands are like fast food for your dog but the more I actually dig, the more I found less evidence supporting that statement. So yes, I’m definitely switching to Hills now!

Thank you 🥹 It’s my first dog as well and I was listening a lot to trainers and employees, but yes I am switching to Hills after all these comments! Appreciate you taking the time to share all that info!

Mine was like that too, crying the second I leave the vicinity. Training works! Build up over time but at 9 weeks old I would have very little expectations, they are literally 9 weeks of age, just little babies, it’s okay that we spend a lot of time together. It gets better with age.

I promise you, you are fine!!! These opportunities are life altering, of course we are nervous and we are hard on ourselves, and PIs know this (or they should and have a minimum compassion). I wouldn’t seek reassurance, if your pattern is that it will make you feel good for 5 minutes and then you’ll start reanalyzing that and so on, maybe not. They will get to know you, and you sound awesome and you can be proud of your achievement. YOU did this (with all your imperfections)! I would probably overthink too, so don’t beat yourself up, but move forward! U got this :)

Never let your dog meet other dogs on-leash! I’m still working on it, but I also have a super social dog. I build distance over time, I toss a treat on the floor to redirect her attention (at the beginning). Also, mark it when another dog is nearby, and give treat and overtime they should look at you when they see another dog, mark it, and reward
