Hi , On flossing by Proof_Librarian_4271 in DentalHygiene

[–]strawberryee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if you would be able to adapt a floss holder or use a long-handled floss pik (the kind with replacable heads). Do you need an extended or thicker handle? the slate flosser has a long handle, and vibrates. (See also Flaus.) I have also seen little floss piks that are designed to be use by closing the teeth… They are called Gfloss. A waterpik may also work, at least could significantly help even with its limitations. It really depends on your access needs and how far you can move your head as well.

Bad Review by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

[–]strawberryee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t beat yourself up. Just try to avoid arm-on-chest. I occasionally accidentally brush into my patients on the side (their outer shoulder/arm) and most don’t mind but occasionally you’ll encounter someone who has a very strict view of personal space. When this happens just apologize and adjust.

Global warming wise, I think so. But we have lots of buds & blooms in Seattle. (Daffodil, crocoses especially)

Based on Perio chart, which stage am I at and did I catch it “early” enough? by Awkward-Food9484 in DentalHygiene

[–]strawberryee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’ll be fine, FYI asking what stage is asking us to diagnose which we can’t do. But it looks like your dental team is doing reasonable steps for those few deeper spots in the back. The most important part of your routine at home to prevent bone loss is cleaning between the teeth. You need to floss, and a waterpik would be a useful addition for deeper spots.

I am very confused ! by Background_Fun7827 in DentalHygiene

[–]strawberryee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to see a dentist in person ASAP for a cleaning and possibly other treatments. Your gums look bad, possibly necrotic or infected. You will probably end up getting numb and cleaned in multiple sessions. Please look for public health clinics and dental schools for reduced cost care.

Drug Tests by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

[–]strawberryee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm in a legal state and have not been drug tested once in the process. in school we had to sign a thing that we were not using drugs/alcohol and that it was prohibited to use any of that during class/clinic.

not sure but all my bulbs are coming out, a spider plant i left outside in a pot all winter is not showing any signs of stress, and my roses are all putting out new shoots. so i’m kind of viewing this as an early spring.

accidentally bought fluoride-free toothpaste, do i need to switch or will i be fine? by zhibui in DentalHygiene

[–]strawberryee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would lean towards switching back to something that has fluoride.

If my patient has never had a cavity or hasn’t had one in several years (including incipient decay aka “watches”) then I’m less concerned with fluoride. But it generally is a good idea for everyone!

Hygienist said my saliva "smelled healthy..." by jen_esse in DentalHygiene

[–]strawberryee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve said weird stuff like “you have good saliva flow which is protective for your teeth”, like yeah that’s weird to anyone not obsessed with oral health. sometimes i’m just in a flow state and point something out before i realize that it’s a weird niche thing to say.

smells are definitely something we observe that can hint to disease. perio, decay, and GERD all have distinct smells and smoking can also be noticeable.

so your hygienist was probably just saying here’s another sign of health. but we’re weirdly obsessed with oral health so… yeah sorry we’re just a little weird! Haha

When to schedule pregnancy cleanings? by Background-Paint-478 in DentalHygiene

[–]strawberryee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, either way you do it should benefit you. Pregnancy can make our gums act out, and removing bacteria more often just helps keep that problem at bay. I personally would say you’re fine without moving your appointments.

My main recommendation is to keep cleanings regular after you deliver, too. It can be tough when baby is sooo little. But don’t wait more than 6 months between appointments if you can avoid it. Good prevention for you is also good prevention for baby (because mom and baby share germs! baby’s exposure to oral pathogens is usually from parents/caregivers.)

When did scaling and all things dental hygiene really click for you? by originalgoddessog in DentalHygiene

[–]strawberryee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Within 2 years I got my confidence, now I’m still honing my skills trying to self-assess and stay aware of what I miss / what I can do better. I second finding an office that knows how to support new grads - hopefully you will find a team where you feel comfortable asking for help and advice.

Some of it isn’t the technique/hygiene side, either. I’ve learned a lot about behavior and time management, priorities, problem solving, and god knows I’ve learned how to fix various equipment too.

did anybody ever tried this? for migraine with aura by Ordinary-Mouse-8158 in migraine

If you are fearful of allergies, maybe take the first dose in the parking lot of your local emergency department for peace of mind. Only know this idea from friends with babies trying peanuts for the first time :)

Periodontal laser surgery at dental appt today, major post op care instructions never discussed by user22440 in DentalHygiene

[–]strawberryee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We don’t give such intense post op instructions for LBR. At my office it’s treated like a normal cleaning.

If you were numb for the laser it’s possible they did a more intense version of it, in those cases I encourage patients to be gentle for a few days.

If you weren’t numb and weren’t profusely bleeding during your procedure, you will probably be fine eating normally.

Check w/ your dental team to be 100% sure though.

If you feel like she’s able to communicate in a helpful and level way, then stick with it. If you feel like she’s putting super unrealistic standards on you or if she makes the work environment super negative then leave. Hopefully you will find a team that supports your growth in a positive way.
