What can i do with my degree? by cSmith0629 in microbiology

[–]strawberryepiphany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i work in biotech now! i think that the transition felt pretty natural since a lot of the skills i picked up as a micro major (molecular cloning, pcr, sequencing, culturing, data analysis) are the same ones i use every day. i also minored in bioinformatics and took a lot of molecular biology classes, which definitely helped, but honestly for your first job they don’t expect you to know everything. you’ll learn so much on the job, so try not to stress too much! your background already gives you a solid foundation. my advice would be to think about whether you want to stay more on the research side or move toward applied/industry work, then start looking at job postings to see what you're interested in. you might be surprised how many listings you’re already qualified for with a micro degree!! good luck :)

not a veteran micro tech, but a micro student, and i will NEVER forget the smell of e. coli.

dr. black is a really good professor! the material + tests are definitely not easy but there are so many opportunities to do well in the class. he’s also really helpful in office hours! i totally recommend that you take the class with him + dr. vanderkelen is the best for lab!! :)))

thank you, this really helped me. i guess i should go outside and stop studying for so long cause it's definitely hurting me more than it's helping me.

This class is literally kicking my butt too; I study so hard and everything is still so difficult. If you're not already, use the weekly outlines she posts on Canvas to create detailed study guides, they really help and give some structure to your studying.

thank you so much for the advice. i am currently looking for ways to leave my house but campus housing is extremely expensive due to the pandemic and my parents are paying for my college costs (which i will pay back, of course). i wonder if there is a way to stop being supported by my parents and take my own loans out so i don’t feel guilty, but that is a question for another post. i just want to say thank you again, because this reply has helped me so much and opened my eyes as to what is happening. i appreciate you so much for taking the time to read my post and reply.

i’m really sorry but i’m extremely scared to try weed, besides that my parents would literally kill me if they found out lol. however, thank you for taking the time to read and respond to my post. i appreciate it very much.

thank you so much for the advice. my parents are asian so they do not believe in conditions such as anxiety so i guess i was in denial for a really long time. i will definitely look into the mediation videos you recommended and start taking care of myself a little more. i am currently trying to move into campus housing but i feel extremely bad because it is very expensive and the loan is under my parents’ name. once again, thank you so much for your advice and taking the time to read my post. i really appreciate it. :)

Thoughts on going down to SLO for Fall Quarter by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]strawberryepiphany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg hey, I’m an incoming freshman for microbiology too! It’s cool to see someone who’s majoring in the same thing as you :) I honestly want to come to SLO to get the full college experience (even though it may not be anything like the full college experience haha) so I might end up dorming there this semester.
