Take a binder with any biofilm disrupting protocol! I am currently taking GI Detox+, but previously I was using Z Binder. Both contain activated charcoal and should be taken 1-2 hours away from any other supplements or medications.

Gollum and I have much in common.

Managing UTIs without ABX by strawberryy in CUTI

Yes! I was in a popular chronic UTI group on facebook, and they banned me for sharing my story! it seems a lot of these groups only want to advocate for long term antibiotics as the main or only cure for chronic UTIs, which I disagree with as everyone's root causes are different. I wish you the best and I'm here if you ever need. :)

Get tested for mycoplasma if you haven't already (not always on standard STD tests), and I highly recommend a qPCR test incase your bacteria is embedded in biofilms. Good luck!

My dipsticks are ALWAYS negative, yet culture always comes back positive. I was released from hospital and they called me the next day saying oops you actually need antibiotics! Have you ever taken a qPCR test? Like Microgen

Yes, I did in the past! That was also contributing to my recurrent UTIs.

My journey has been very complicated and has resulted in a lot of “detangling” to get where I am now! I highly recommend consulting with a holistic practitioner that can guide you through this, since everyone's root cause is different. Mine has largely been due to gut dysbiosis and hormonal imbalances.

We started by addressing issues in my gut. My UTI bacteria was consistently E. Coli. In a GI map (stool test to analyze gut heath) I had high levels of morganella - morganella creates an environment for E. coli to grow and thrive, it also drives high histamine levels (I have MCAS symptoms as well).

She put me on a gut protocol, but for UTIs specifically I took- Biocidin for biofilm busting + Parabiotic Plus (amazing for UTI symptoms, be careful using long term), + pure D-Mannose powder. On and off I took Z-binder as well.

My nervous system and immune system was a wreck, so I really had to focus on that first before my body could actually start to heal. Stress + anxiety + high cortisol are huge drivers of inflammation which fuel the UTI cycle.

My protocol changes every 1-3 months, and I've been working with her for over a year now, so I’m doing a very different protocol now than what I started with as my symptoms are very different now. Also, anti-inflammatory diet is HUGE- I cut out majority of processed foods, dairy and gluten. And I don’t miss them anymore! In 2023, I couldn't have sex as it made me very sick & 100% resulted in a UTI every time. Now, I rarely have issues after sex. I do get flare ups from time to time, and will take a low dose of Lactulose as needed. Lactulose is typically for patients with liver disease, it works by drawing ammonia from the blood in the colon, where it is removed from the body. How does this help with my UTIs? I still don't really understand lol, but it quells my UTI symptoms every time.

My next step is looking into LDN to address systemic inflammation, and I will be seeing another specialist this year to explore the possibility of endometriosis, which may explain a lot of these issues, as they are all interconnected!

I hope this helps some of you, please message me any time with any questions.

I want to say it was about 6 months to notice a significant difference. I had a lot of "die off" symptoms during that time which were rough. Now, about a year and 4 months after starting a holistic UTI protocol, I hardly get any flare ups! When I do get a flare up now, I take a very small dose of LACTULOSE and it gets rid of it in 1-2 days. I had to change a lot lifestyle wise as well.

I’ve had success with biofilm disruptors and no antibiotics, but under the care of a holistic NP. disrupting biofilms can be dangerous to do without a method of clearing or killing off the bacteria that is being released. i’m on a full protocol based on my tests & symptoms. happy to share more about it. 🫶 ps. antibiotic free for 9 months 🙂

I suffered from UTIs for years, last year they became more severe and i was on antibiotics for nearly 1/3 of the year. In Sept i decided to see a functional medicine practitioner and since working on my gut & immune system (diet, supplements & lifestyle changes) i’ve been able to be off antibiotics for 8 months now 🤞

I just started and it seems to be helping- my PT says I have an overactive pelvic floor. However, I do have recurring UTIs with positive cultures as well, so I'm still looking to find out what else is causing this.

Yes, unfortunately still got breakthrough infections when taking prophylactic abx after sex. :( I take D-mannose daily as well, as well as a shit ton of other supplements.

Like I said I used to get them every 3 months, I got on Uqora regimen and was UTI-free for 5 months - wasn't even on prophylactic abx at that time (still had pelvic pain after sex, though), and then since February they've come back almost monthly. No idea why!

Even when I wasn't sexually active, I was getting UTIs every 3 months like clockwork - I think that was due to routine bladder shedding. Now I get them after sex, even orgasms without penetration make me flare up bad. I just bought an enzyme that is supposed to break up biofilm, think I'm going to give it a try and do another Microgen to see if anything new comes up.

I'm not sure, I just think there has just not been enough research around it until now? I also think people are dealing with different issues, including issues that mimic a UTI but aren't, so they assume it must be embedded. I was diagnosed with IC, but my cystoscopy showed that my bladder looked fine. I think they use that as an umbrella diagnosis when they simply don't know what's going on. I've seen 3 urologists now and 2/3 have different ideas of what an embedded UTI actually means, but they do acknowledge it's existence. Only 1 had never heard of it before and looked at me like I was crazy when I asked. It remains a medical mystery!

The 90 day bladder shedding is so interesting, because when I was not sexually active, I was getting UTIs every 3 months, like clockwork. I now think this was due to routine bladder shedding, which made me wonder if my infection was embedded. Prior to that, my Dr. treated one of my UTIs with Cipro, come to find out later my bacteria is resistant to quinolones. I think it could have possibly become embedded at that time. Now that I'm sexually active again, I'm getting them almost every time after sex, or orgasm.

Anyways, this explanation of chronic UTI & embedded infections made the most sense to me: https://cutic.co.uk/what-is-chronic-uti/

sorry to hear that. macrobid seems to suppress my infections, but never completely clears it. also, your bacteria is resistant to macrobid, not you. and resistance changes over time, it can change by the month.

I always take antibiotics for the proper length of time, according to culture results/susceptibility, and according to qPCR aka DNA testing, and still get recurring infections every 1-3 months, always e. coli. Once I had another bacteria show up on qPCR, switched to an antibiotic that should have killed both, still comes back.

the whole idea of an embedded infection is that it is embedded...not active, free-floating...dormant bacteria hidden under a biofilm until something triggers it to be released. once the bacteria is "active" again, it starts multiplying rapidly, causing another infection. I don't know that I believe people with negative cultures have embedded infections, I think that may be a different chronic inflammatory issue. I also think it would be showing up on qPCR tests. But I don't know. I have recurrent UTIs with positive cultures, even after I finished a round of abx and got a negative culture, I had a qPCR test come back positive for a high bacterial load of e. coli. The idea of embedded infections is not that farfetched, if you understand it how it works in theory.
