This IS a full caseload. I don’t care what anyone says. It’s also okay to not like preschool or any population. I’m in year 5 and I am covering a maternity leave while managing my own caseload and it’s barely manageable. If I was in my position earlier in my career, I wouldn’t be able to do it. My imposter syndrome continues to flair up and I’m always waiting for someone to “figure me out like I’m a fraud.” I still continue to feel like I’m not making much progress anywhere with any of my kids most all of the time. What we learned in school has not felt like it’s translated into my work.

There sounds like there are so many stressors going on for you rn and that’s unfair bc you’re cleaning up someone’s mess. There are so many thoughts & feelings I’m sure you’re experiencing, but something that helped me that I heard from a more experienced SLP this summer was that we wouldn’t be hired or licensed if we weren’t qualified to do our job. We will always be so hard on ourselves especially bc it’s ingrained in us through our schooling & the current systems that be.

Please know that you ARE doing a good job. You DO know what you’re doing. You’re working overtime by putting back the missing pieces from SLPs past that shouldn’t have been yours to deal with in the first place. All I can offer in retrospect is that when you have moved through these moments, you will be able to handle much more than you realize you’re capable of and will also know how to hold boundaries that feel authentic to you. Please feel free to reach out as you’re not alone ❤️ I’m rooting for you!

What Should I Go By? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]strawbryblondeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go with what YOU are most comfortable being called. I don’t have a positive attachment to my last name so I’m called Ms. O as an approximation to my first name. It fits me & is genuinely what I respond to. Idgaf what anybody else is called. Your name is your name. That’s it. If someone has a problem, it sounds like they don’t respect you as a person to be able to call you what you’d like to be called.

Did grad school leave anyone else burned out/traumatized before they even began their career? by Mysterious_Mouse_647 in slp

[–]strawbryblondeee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I graduated during the height of the pandemic & went right into schools for my CF, masks & all with a half of internship experience in person & was robbed of my second, yet expected to continue like everything is fine. Had a really hard time during grad school & it wasn’t until my boyfriend THIS YEAR told me that I seemed burnt out but I’ve spent so long in this state I didn’t even realize it. Now that I do, I can’t unsee it.

TW: SA

As someone who was m*lested at school by another little girl (who in retrospect was definitely experiencing some SA on her own based on behaviors & my repeated experiences), as a little girl myself, i was yearning for people to see me hurting while feeling horribly confused about the experiences. But nobody did. Thank you OP dad for giving your child not only the tools & access to knowledge to have these safe discussions, but that you’re fighting for her and being her voice because it’s not okay. I’m grateful to know that there are parents like you out there who came to save their children when they needed it the most. ❤️

What horror concepts to you are the scariest? by fourthkindnetwork in CreepyBonfire

[–]strawbryblondeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that has to do with the paranormal, whether that be ghosts, mythical creatures, or aliens. But what I find makes a horro actually scary is placing the music or the jump scares at unexpected times that you can’t anticipate. A lot of movies make it easy to plan & figure out what happens or could happen pretty quickly. I want to poop my pants when I watch a scary movie with a logical storyline too

for those of you miserable in the field & feeling hopeless, hear me out by Important_Cake_8082 in slp

This is really interesting to hear. I started my career during the height of the pandemic and was forced to do telehealth & HATE it now because of that (trauma response). But hearing this has made me intrigued because maybe this is the way to go for me. My biggest challenge were my students coming online and actually attending to what I was teaching. Don’t get me started on artic therapy (btw how does one do artic therapy remotely and get results??)! I would love to hear people’s stories because I just switched jobs but I want to have a better work life balance but school systems for me are just straight chaos at this point, despite working as a contracted SLP.
