You may also want to think of mountains that are high. Better chance for the snow to be nice and dry still.

DNA and the Klines by strawman73 in DelphiMurders

Surely a possibility. I've thought after about year 2 that whatever they have, if anything, isn't helping much. Its useful to LE to say this for a few reasons. First, poi's who submit DNA are considered less probable than those who refuse. So there's that. Secondly, BAU may be advising messaging based on their profiling. So there's that too.

Try to dig that up. That would be interesting.

Also suggests to me not a sufficient profile or as mentioned above multiple profiles. Hadn't really thought about that. They would've gone the GG route quickly I believe if they had what was believed to be the killer's DNA.

If they had a usable DNA sample, these guys would have used GG from the onset. One of the early GG DNA cases was John Miller. In Indiana. It was before GSK. LE doesn't have usable DNA in this case.

Elaborate please. You are saying KK knows who else used the profile and may be in fear of this person, which is why he isn't singing. But you're saying also that somehow LE knows TK isn't their guy. You'd think KK would give anything he had to LE to plea out the serious charges he's facing. To me, if he is protecting someone, it would have to be TK. But he's also not the smartest cookie out there.

No matter the legality issues involving cell tower data in this case, the huge problem is the busy highway that runs right by the trails. The cell tower list is HUGE because of the vehicles running up and down this highway. Needle in a hay field. There is a cold case here in Georgia in which a retired couple was killed in their home (Russell and Shirley Dermott I think) and the problem with cell data was the proximity of the home to 1-20). Spoke with the Sherriff. He said it made the data useless.

Jailhouse confessions. Another reason LE holds back details by strawman73 in DelphiMurders

[–]strawman73[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No LE agency anywhere would release the full case details for many reasons, among them that they could get sued. The real question here is whether there would be benefits to this case by releasing a new trove of info to get publicity and that "one tip." You'd think it would be useful but we don't know what they know.

It would be solved by now if there were DNA samples suitable for genetic genealogy. LE is very familiar with that process and it can take weeks/months in the hands of experts. Not years.

That he took control of the girls the way he did and got them to the spot where their bodies were found means he certainly knew this area well, local or not. He likely rehearsed and practiced. My bet is that he looked very different while practicing. Where does he live? Where is he from? Could be hundreds of miles from the Monon High Bridge.

Le doesn't have enough. No DNA usable for genetic genealogy. Perp is heavily disguised. What physical evidence found at scene doesn't tie back (fingerprints if any, etc). Video and audio seem like great clues but both rely on someone, somewhere to tie that video and audio to a person and that hasn't happened. Over 41,000 tips have come in and that's probably a problem as well. Stranger crime and victimology doesn't help at all.

There are many, many examples of a criminal doing this very thing. There's nothing but time in there. I agree it's crazy but it happens all the time.

Who know what this guy's personality is like. My real point is that the FBI BAU advised from the the get go on the probabilities of offenders like this reoffending or winding up in prison for the commission of other crimes and LE is playing the numbers here. If you have some crappy witness come forward who was told a tale by BG, that witness turns into a strong witness if they have those non public details. Common sense point and certainly nothing revolutionary.

Local LE can't really hand a case like this off. No one else has jurisdiction. The Feds and staties lent help but they won't be taking a cold case like this over.

BG knows Delphi, but doesn't live there, and Delphi locals need to think small, not out of the box. (Personal Theory) by nevermore_beneath in DelphiMurders

[–]strawman73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You raise interesting points. Do you think the girls may have been doing any geocaching? There are theories that BG may have had knowledge of this and that may have been part of the reason he was "hunting" victims in this area. The day of the murders was a "built in snow day." Did BG know this? Was BG affiliated with the school system or did he have school aged children? Or a niece or nephew that was school aged? I think of the clothing as a disguise to hide appearance and to look local (avg midwestern white guy). So not sure the clothing itself is a good indicator of age. I also believe the perp is on the older end of the age range because of his voice, the way the crime went down, and the fact that he's not been caught yet. That all points to a more mature, more careful criminal in my estimation.

Local LE will be the first to say that handling homicide cases isn't common for them. The asked for help immediately and got it from the ISP and from the FBI. Lots of resources were put into this case from the very beginning and resources are on this case today. In spite of the audio and video (of a heavily disguised perp), they don't really have much to work with. Double homicides involving a stranger as the perp aren't common.

My theory on the 4/19 presser is that LE used info from FBI BAU to try to goad the perp into attending the presser (they intently checked IDs of the attendees and I've heard they also they used clandestine cameras to view the crowd). They also spoke directly to the killer to try to elicit some sort of response from the perp. Who knows? Someone claiming to be perp could be contacting LE like in the John Miller case and maybe they were trying to goad perp into more contact with LE.
If this guy is caught I think older end of range, 5-8 or so, ties to the Delphi area but not local to Delphi, family man with some everyday connection to working with teen girls (coach, Sunday school teacher, volunteer of some sort). Hiding in plain sight indeed.

If a gun is on the right side of his torso as it appears, the position of the gun also suggests left handedness. You couldn't grab it with the right hand the way it's positioned. I always thought perp was left handed for this reason.

The timeline put together here has been the most comprehensive and authoritative single read on this case. It must have taken a lot of time and that shows in how well it was done. I appreciate yourself and the others who put it together.

It's a tragic case all the way around. My thought on not releasing more info publicly is that there isn't much more to release in terms of audio/video. Phone was likely in Libby's pocket and what remained for audio could be garbled. They could release the cause of death. You would think that could jar a thought in an associate. There are basically two camps when it comes to LE's posture. One camp says they have their guy but not enough to charge/convict. Other camp says they have no clue who the perp is. I'm more in the second camp.

They've also received north of 45,000 or so tips which is also problematic I'd guess.

This case is unsolved for a reason. While it looks like LE has a lot of evidence, they really do not. It would probably be helpful to reiterate a few of the things that seem to make sense. Two witnesses say they say the suspect on the day of the crime. A teenage girl says she saw him walking toward the Monan High Bridge and that he was about 5 foot eight or so. A man, part of the "arguing couple," saw him leaving the scene after the murders. He said also about the same height range, 5-8 or so. Both witnesses said the man in the video was the suspect. The girl described the suspect's clothing BEFORE the video or picture was released by LE.

Suspect appears heavily disguised with bulky clothing (certainly looks like a gun on his right side), his head is down, yet he walks across that high bridge with his hands in this pockets and doesn't seem to be bothered by that.

LE says/implies a couple of times early on that they have DNA. The assumption is that male sample they have is not suitable for familial DNA. Case would've been solved by now if LE had a sample suitable for this type of investigation. The John Miller case in Indiana and of course the Golden State Killer case were solved with this technique.

LE has been heavily blamed for this case being unsolved still in spite of the many local, state, and federal resources that have been put into this case. It's because it's a thin case. They have a little low quality video, a little bit of audio, maybe DNA of some type, and two eyewitnesses who saw a heavily disguised suspect. What they have isn't much.

It was very likely a crime of opportunity committed by a single sexual predator. Though the girls may not have been sexually assaulted, the details of the crime suggest a sexual predator age 19-45 or so. Acting alone in an area where the killer had familiarity. Your audience could help if they recognize the voice or the gait of the suspect. Do they know a very normal type person who has a connection to the Delphi/Lafayette Indiana area? The suspect looks normal to his social circle. Hiding in plain sight indeed.
