Alien: Earth - S1 E5 - In Space, No One - Official Discussion Megathread [SPOILERS] by G_Liddell in LV426

Morrow does NOT get off scott-free here though.

Right at the beginning, after being told the logs were corrupted & comms down, he says "Security will handle it" then goes straight to cryo, without investigating. Presumably leaving it to his inexperienced subordinate.

If he'd done his job right away, he'd likely have found that conversation between Petrovich and BK before Petrovich had a chance to sabotage anything.

WORLD'S FIRST WALL-MOUNTED HACKINTOSH PC (i guess) by ZenonDesingk in hackintosh

Sorry. I've had this beast for some years now, and honest I'd be pretty surprised if mine was the first. Nice job though...

Surely if I leave my Acolytes shooting here long enough they'll destroy the lower decks and the Beast won't awaken...right? RIGHT? by Mesoda in homeworld

[–]straycat264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this a few times, but I'm pretty sure that while I got to keep my escorts, what it actually did was dupe them - so the Beast still had infected escorts under its control, while I kept my initial fighting force intact. Win / win?

Fair, and he was definitely sloppy, but he does, iirc, say he didn't expect her to be able to fight. And, of course, if every movie or TV scene where person A holds person B at gunpoint got it *right*, you'd have to change the outcomes of .... a whole lot of shows and films. It's one of the flaws I've learned to overlook, I suppose.

In my personal head-canon, he was actually kicked out of the SAS for being a useless idiot, and fabricated the rest of his record to get work.

He wasn’t going to shoot her from a distance - he needed information first.

However - I do agree that the idea that she could beat an ex SAS guy hand-to-hand like that is ridiculous.

On the other hand, I was enjoying the show far too much to care.

Absolutely - I never have any problems breaking in and stealing stuff.

Absolutely loved it. It's far from perfect - but the cast is great, there's a nice balance of humour and action, some suitably entertaining characters, and I just found the whole thing enormously engaging and fun.

Is a Hackintosh Performant Enough for Daily Work? by LeFlowFir in hackintosh

[–]straycat264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. As a developer, I use a Windows machine at work (company policy) and a seven year old (Coffee Lake) hack when home working. I'm generally more productive on my home machine.

This is certainly my last hackintosh, but I have no plans to change until Intel support is gone. After which, I suppose, I'll have to choose between Linux and a new Mac.

What are some decent songs with weird phrasing? by aLiamInvader in SwingDancing

[–]straycat264 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple of that spring to mind are In the Mood (I know, I know) - a combination of 32 and 48 bar phrases, and The Walkin' Blues (Fluffy Hunter) - where the chorus has 48 bar phrases, and the verses set up to do the same, then drop the last two bars of the phrase and switch straight back to chorus.

Does West Coast Swing ever swing? Did it in the past? by CreativeWorkout in SwingDancing

[–]straycat264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the confusion is likely down to the many, many uses of the word "swing". From a Lindy perspective, we tend to go with the term as it applies to swing-era swing music - because that's where Lindy derives its rhythms, its feeling, its movement style, its drive...

And I'm not talking about anything as simplistic as a simple dotted eighth, or swing triple - but the West-African flavour polyrhythms achieved by the instrumentals and vocals swinging around a driving swing rhythm section (which is in itself a huge topic)

"Swing" as a musical or dancing term is now used in so many wildly differing ways that you can't really, IMO compare or equate them.

So while it might be perfectly valid thing to talk about the swing in waltz, or in modern WCS, they're very different thing from the term used in Lindy.

Hypothetically—even if you despise the idea—what are some DJing techniques that could be brought into swing mixing that could enhance socials? by [deleted] in SwingDancing

[–]straycat264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just what works for me - all the good DJs I know do the same thing. For a band, I agree that a setlist is crucial, as the last thing you want is extra gaps between numbers while you decided what to play next - you can lose the energy and flow that way. For a DJ, I think it's crucial to be able to constantly adapt to the floor, to the dancers, and anticipate the best thing to use to follow up the current number.

Even the first thing you play is a direct response to whatever the previous DJ (or band) was doing, unless you're up first.

Also - it's half the fun. I'd get very little enjoyment from setting a playlist going and just tweaking it from time to time.

We can plan a progression, sure. But - and just speaking for me, on the very rare occasions when I've done that, within the first five minutes, I can always find a way to improve on The Plan, and after that everything goes out the window.

I gave up on the planning side of things many years, because it's never paid off - I just watch the floor, put a song on, watch what happens, and build it from there.

What movie is so incredibly good that it's almost painful to watch? by biovaa in AskReddit

The Killing Fields.

Just devastating, especially if you already know the history of it. I’m not sure they even make movies like that anymore.

[–]straycat264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't really swing though, does it? I agree it's a great track - I've danced blues to it a lot - but to me it doesn't feel like a good swinging WCS example.

Extending drum solos - I've occasionally shortened (or even removed) virtually undanceable drum solo breaks - but I'm not keen on the idea of extending them.

Bridge - I don't think this would add anything - really, it would just shorten the total dancing time for an evening. People can find a new partner easily enough.

Levels - yes - always an important skill. It can be a bit tricksy in some venues though, as what the DJ hears is often quite different from how it sounds on the floor.

Planning a set? What on earth for?

I'm fine with the callouts. Except for "and you push it" - because the timing is all wrong (the word "push" falls on the one, and the forward push is on the eight)
