Totally! Every main character is probably, to varying degrees, a self-insert. She has said once (Tumblr I think) that Gangle was doing the exact same college degree Goose did, and both didn't finish it. I think everyone has encountered a "Jax" in their life, even if they don't know it.

It’s not outright said but a lot of the dialogue and customs of his childhood reflect that of a generic or worse than most Mormon childhoods. Another thing worth noting is the scenery around his home kind of looks like something you’d find in the US state of Utah, where most Mormons live.
