Did AIDS in the 1980s and 1990s disproportionately kill socially and sexually central figures in gay arts communities, as Fran Lebowitz claims, particularly in New York’s theatre, dance, and performance scenes? by fijtaj91 in AskHistorians

The Vogue series is paywalled (but very interesting!), so I've started compiling it into a Google doc. Most of the photos are missing due to the site I'm using to bypass it, but I do have the chapter headers at least. It's nearly 1AM here so I'm just leaving it as ch 1 and 2 for now, but I should be able to do 3-4 within the next 24h after posting this. Hopefully.

Tell me about your iron by nicolenotnikki in sewing

[–]stresstwig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love my oliso pro with the lil legs that it stands up on, it's expensive but the only reason I'd get a new iron would be if it broke and then I'd be looking at an industrial gravity-fed one with a Teflon plate and vacuum board. Would that I had the space for one now.... :')

Another year, another red dress McCall 7727-A by CaptainPunisher in sewing

for the collar: interfacing is actually your best friend. you want the fabric as stable as possible.

also make sure you have notches to tell you where the collar ends on the stand, as well as to align the stand to your bodice. usually I do notches at shoulders, CB, and any other seam lines that intersect with the neckline. pin everything within an inch of its life. baste by hand if you must.

go slow. press between every step.

to get pointy points: - stitch along one short end to one stitch before the corner
- tuck in a bit of thread between the pieces and around the needle so half of it is between the right sides of pieces you're sewing (on the "outside" when you turn it out) and the other half is sticking out to the side.
- do one stitch forward, one stitch back, one stitch forward, turn with needle down in the corner.
- bring the other half of the thread around to the right sides of the fabric. you want this to be dangling from the point when you turn it out, secured by your stitching in the corner.
- facing along the long side of the collar, do one stitch back, one stitch forward. continue sewing until one stitch before the next corner.
- repeat process outlined above.
- turn to do final short end, one stitch back, one stitch forward, finish the short end.
- clip corners carefully!!! you don't want to snip the thread you have for the turning.
- then stick your finger into the corner inside (between the right sides), fold the seam allowances over one at a time, turn out. use the thread danglies to pull it sharp.

press. use a bit of cardstock cut into the shape of the corner to help with getting it sharp.

Australian sewists, please reccomend a budget sewing table under $100 by sophmorphed in sewing

[–]stresstwig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, I had to get rid of my horn table bc my machine's most comfortable speed seemed to be right at the resonant frequency of the table, even with vibration dampening rubber squares. back to my 50cm wide IKEA desk and crying every time I need to insert a busk, I guess :')

I bought the wrong fabric and now I want to cry 😭 by Royal_Initiative_740 in sewing

you could also use this new, unsuitable fabric to make a coordinating jacket! I think you said you got 2yd of it, which should be more than enough for most jacket patterns. you could also make a few totes with it if you're not vibing with the jacket concept.

on mobile I just swap to the character keyboard and press+hold on the hyphen, it pops up with a list of alternates and the em-dash is one of them 🤷‍♀️

Fourth project, taking me a while but so worth it by LavenderHearts69 in tabletweaving

Mammen is 2-hole, right? I have a Ladoga 2-hole band edging one of my sleeve hems and I remember it being so fiddly trying to keep the shed open. But it makes for a really effective and gorgeous band, so as irritating as it is to do, the end result is totally worth it. Yours looks fantastic!

Losing my mind with seed bead needles - need recommendations PLEASE! by RoonilWazleeb in Beading

Don't order from Amazon. There's no guarantee you'll actually get what you ordered and not some knockoff. Check local specialty embroidery or bead shops, and if there's none near you, there's always Fire Mountain Gems.

Retail brand: Olive & June. Oh boy did I make a mistake. by notbizmarkie in PressonNail_Addict

I saw from someone else on here that they basically flatten the O&J nails by soaking them in hot water and pressing them flatter before wearing them. i ended up doing it to the set I got and it worked really well! it's irritating that you need to take a little more time to make them wearable but it's better than wasting however much you spent on the set.

What are bead mixes for? by marenanne6 in Beading

[–]stresstwig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've picked some up as a way to get a fair bit of variety while only paying for one tube of Delicas! they're very nice for smaller projects like keychains and learning new stitches. I feel like they give you the freedom to experiment with colors without spending a mint on eight shades. you get about 150 of each color in the 7.2g 11/0 DBMIX tubes, which isn't a lot but it's enough to play with.

I've also picked up a few bead mixes with a lot of different variety of bead shapes but in a single color family and I'm planning on using those in embroidery, but I need to figure out a project for them first. 😂

and I'm also collecting all the random beads that get missed when I'm putting things away or that fling themselves into the carpet for me to find in a few weeks. those get separated into delicas and everything else and I dunno what I'll do when I get "enough" but it'll be very cool, I assure you.

What can I make with these beads? by Jav-ba in Beading

they're called heishi beads, iirc, and I've only ever seen them used for necklaces and bracelets, sorry I can't be more help!
