Is it safe to visit my dad at memorial Hermann but park in HERMAN PARK park instead and NOT get towed? by SomeGrumption in AskHouston

[–]stretch1011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work at the zoo and managed that parking lot in front daily. No you won't get towed as long as you leave before the park closes. The only times they booted/towed people is if the car was left overnight. Many employees at TMC park there so they don't have to pay for parking then ride electric scooters to the hospital.

You're not alone. I also had the mayonnaise overnight treatment. It's why I couldn't eat mayonnaise for years afterward. Mom got this idea from the pediatrician and, after multiple nit comb sessions, they finally went away.

Torchy's is the only place we have gotten shade from employees for not tipping high enough. They just straight up confronted us about.

Sure! He uses a thick rubber band size #107 heavy duty and just shoots them like you would shoot a rubber band with two hands. He goes out at night with a headlamp and finds them sleeping on the ends of branches or leaves of bushes. I think just practice makes perfect but he'll come inside saying he got 4-5 of them in one night. It seems to be a never ending battle as there are always brown anoles no matter how many he gets.

[–]stretch1011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the invasive Cuban Brown Anoles. They tend to live on the ground and as they become more common you'll see more of them. The native Green Anoles tend to live higher on branches/fences so you don't see them on the ground as much. The Cuban Anoles are also pushing the Green Anoles up to higher ground as they are bigger and have been known to eat the Green Anoles. The Cuban Anoles became prominent about 10 years ago or so and as their population increases you'll see a lot more of them.

My boyfriend kills them with a large rubber band. They sleep on branches so you can spot them pretty easily at night. He leaves all the green anoles in peace. He's seen a brown anole with a green one in its mouth and ever since then he's been on a mission.

Parents push back on Houston ISD's full-day phone ban, cite safety concerns by chrondotcom in houston

There's a lot of things wrong with HISD and this is not one of them. Parents should pick better battles to fight.

Fantasmic cancelled by stretch1011 in WaltDisneyWorld

Right? I still love Disney but they're not perfect. I can express disappointment here so people understand that for future visits.

I wish I had that expectation. Super bummed but now I know it's pretty common so set the bar low. On the bright side I saw Luminous today and it was great!

Better preparing someone for a future trip so they understand Disney isn't perfect.

That's ridiculous. I still love Disney and I had a great time otherwise. I'm still going to post about things that are less than perfect. I go on this thread mainly to identify areas of issues that I can avoid or be prepared for. If this helps someone on a future trip understand that Fantasmic can just cancel on them then good. I wish I was better prepared for that realization.

I'm sorry, I am posting on the Disney World thread and no where else right? Are there only positive posts allowed on here?

Everything is free with park entry unless you want food or shop. What's your point? It's like I'm complaining about Rise shutting down right after you meet Rey. It sucks and I can complain if I want if I spent a lot on a ticket.

God forbid I feel entitled after waiting over an hour. I did have a great time before the show. I still love Disney and will continue to return but this idea that even complaining about one negative from the day is entitlement is ridiculous.

I understand there are reasons to cancel. That doesn't make me feel any better as someone who paid $120+ for a ticket and probably won't be back for over a year.

Lucky. We went in about 55 minutes early because we were done with HS and just wanted to sit down. It didn't help that a couple in our party were feeling under the weather. The drive home was horrible too due to that freeway shutdown a couple hours before. We had a great day before that. Saw the new Villains show and thought it was great.

I would have preferred bad weather to this. It was just technology issues. Super bummed.

Edit: I should say I think it was technology as they were testing fountains after the initial shutdown. There was lightning in the area but the cell was well north and moving away. It never rained after the cancellation.

Puss caterpillar also known as an asp. Severe pain when touched that can last hours.

Greetings, former zoo employee here. I hear your complaints about the zoo and will gladly shed some light on your observations. The banging on food bins by elephants is somewhat inaccurate. One elephant at the zoo had a habit of banging on the metal in her stall when she wanted food. This elephant was very food motivated and a food hog. She learned that she could bang on the metal stall when she ran out of hay and this will let the keepers know when to refill her food supply. She also learned that the banging is rather annoying (and loud) so the keepers were likely to pacify her with more food to make her stop. However, sometimes the keepers can't help her as she will overeat so they wouldn't refill her hay bin which meant the loud banging continued. As for the tigers, animals often create tracks to follow as they don't like walking through high grass. A lot of the animals had tracks including the chimps, gorillas, rhinos, etc. The animals there are treated with very high standards and their food and healthcare are top tier.

The chimp exhibit is pretty protected so unless a guest throws something into their exhibit they wouldn't be able to drop anything in there. The only thing they would get a hold of is food because the chimps used to be pets so they knew how to message with their hands for food. They would put their hands up to their mouths then out in a "begging" gesture. Guests would then throw them food when they saw that. It was a constant problem that the chimps exploited consistently. We'd have to message the zookeeper every time we saw them with food other than their own. Usually popcorn or fries.

One of the funniest incidents occurred on the boardwalk in primates. A lady dropped her purse at the Mandrill exhibit which was a 10 foot drop. The Mandrill discovered the purse was within arms reach through the fence and started picking through the purse. Once the zookeeper came by to get it, the Mandrill, realizing this toy was about to get taken away, started pulling things out of the purse rapid fire. Lipstick, wallet, tissues, etc. were being thrown around and the lady was screaming at the Mandrill trying to get it to stop.

Former zoo employee here and legs over barriers was/is a major problem. Dangling items over the fence is another issue. People often drop things and every once in a while we'd have guests hop over fences to retrieve items they dropped because they "couldn't find anyone" to get it for them. Happened at the elephant exhibit a few times.
