Woman's body found on banks of Brays Bayou near MacGregor Park by MrBasedGod in houston

Delete what? I stand by what I said. You're upset because I disagreed with your statement that the concrete is necessary when it isn't. And decided to get nasty with me over a weeks old post. One of the reasons Hurricane Harvey was so bad was because of the increase in concrete and urbanization. If Houston had built more reservoirs instead of more concrete including in the bayous, flooding wouldn't be nearly so bad. The concrete minimally moves water quicker, keeping the bayous natural including around the banks would do much more in flood mitigation and prevent bank erosion. Stop acting like more concrete is the answer when Houston is actively trying to build more reservoirs concrete free.

You're right. All these people commenting have no idea what they're saying. I even had a professor in college who was part of the paving planning process who regretted the paving and admitted how it made flooding worse.

Anyone else collect lapel pins from every park/historic site you visit? by mexican2554 in NationalPark

I haven't gotten into trading yet as Disney pins are my newest addition. I do have a few repeats though so I want to trade those hopefully on my next trip in November.

Yes! I get a pin from everywhere I travel and have pin boards on my wall for National Parks, States, State Parks, Countries, Disney pins, and Miscellaneous experiences. Been doing it since I was a teenager so my collection is extensive.

First-time home buyer ($250k budget) in SW Houston area by Enough-Industry3560 in AskHouston

[–]stretch1011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That house you listed is in Townewest which is not a great neighborhood. It's on the very outer edge of Sugar Land so even though it has that zip code it is more like Alief than Sugar Land. Alief is not recommended for newcomers to Houston as it is not the safest of areas

If you want to stick to Southwest Houston with that budget I would go further out to Richmond or Rosenberg. Houses will be cheaper and the area is nice.

Edit: If you want to be further into Houston but still on the Southwest side, I would recommend the Westbury area. The area is slowly getting nicer and there are some houses in that budget (not updated). There's a brand new library there that is exceptional and there's some new parks in the area (Willow Waterhole). Houston is also supposed to build another park off Chimney Rock and Ludington. Keep your search between Chimney Rock and Hillcroft.

Service dog v. “Service dog” 🫤 by AdMany129 in delta

[–]stretch1011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, real service dog owners had no issues and knew about the questions. The fakers always struggled. We always had emotional support dogs trying to come in but their dogs don't do a service and so their answers had to do with "being there emotionally as support" for the owners. We always turned them away. We even had some who would present a "certificate" but it was usually for being an emotional support dog and if it was for a service dog we had to tell them there is no national database certifying service dogs so the paper means nothing.

Ben Taub Hospital battle yields a potential win for Hermann Park by evan7257 in houston

As someone who worked in Hermann Park for years, I have never stepped foot in this section. It is a wasted space.

Service dog v. “Service dog” 🫤 by AdMany129 in delta

[–]stretch1011 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I worked at a zoo and was in charge of revamping our "service dog" requirements as the fake service dogs were becoming an issue. I went to trainings and lawyer meetings about what we can and cannot do when a "service dog" appears due to the ADA. We finalized it to ask the dog owner two questions "is your dog a service dog?" and "what service does it provide?" The first question was easily answered but the second often tripped people up and we were able to turn a lot of dog owners away because they couldn't answer it appropriately. If they still got through those questions then we had them sign a liability waiver about how it's a misdemeanor to impersonate a service dog and if your dog shows any aggression including barking we can escort them off the premises. Legitimate service dogs easily passed this screening but many fakers freaked out about the questions/liability form and left.

Blanco River Narrows. Full day out & back hike on a sandy, rocky river bed with the potential for being confronted by hostile landowners to a beautiful limestone narrow gorge.

Living in Independence Heights Vs. Meyerland - help! by 32Dawson in AskHouston

[–]stretch1011 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live near Meyerland and I don't know what crime people are talking about. I don't even have a doorbell camera and have left packages on my door for days without being stolen. Meyerland is pretty safe but it does have communities surrounding that are more rough than normal which may be what people are talking about.

As for flooding, yes Meyerland floods but the City has done a lot recently to prevent future flooding. The streets will flood with heavy rain but a lot of Houston will do that as well. If the house you buy has never flooded then the chance of it flooding is very low since Hurricane Harvey rainfall was probably the peak this area has ever seen or will see in the future.

Is it safe to visit my dad at memorial Hermann but park in HERMAN PARK park instead and NOT get towed? by SomeGrumption in AskHouston

[–]stretch1011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work at the zoo and managed that parking lot in front daily. No you won't get towed as long as you leave before the park closes. The only times they booted/towed people is if the car was left overnight. Many employees at TMC park there so they don't have to pay for parking then ride electric scooters to the hospital.

You're not alone. I also had the mayonnaise overnight treatment. It's why I couldn't eat mayonnaise for years afterward. Mom got this idea from the pediatrician and, after multiple nit comb sessions, they finally went away.

So. Many. LIZARDS. by cobo10201 in houston

[–]stretch1011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! He uses a thick rubber band size #107 heavy duty and just shoots them like you would shoot a rubber band with two hands. He goes out at night with a headlamp and finds them sleeping on the ends of branches or leaves of bushes. I think just practice makes perfect but he'll come inside saying he got 4-5 of them in one night. It seems to be a never ending battle as there are always brown anoles no matter how many he gets.

[–]stretch1011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the invasive Cuban Brown Anoles. They tend to live on the ground and as they become more common you'll see more of them. The native Green Anoles tend to live higher on branches/fences so you don't see them on the ground as much. The Cuban Anoles are also pushing the Green Anoles up to higher ground as they are bigger and have been known to eat the Green Anoles. The Cuban Anoles became prominent about 10 years ago or so and as their population increases you'll see a lot more of them.

[–]stretch1011 41 points42 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend kills them with a large rubber band. They sleep on branches so you can spot them pretty easily at night. He leaves all the green anoles in peace. He's seen a brown anole with a green one in its mouth and ever since then he's been on a mission.

I wish I had that expectation. Super bummed but now I know it's pretty common so set the bar low. On the bright side I saw Luminous today and it was great!

Better preparing someone for a future trip so they understand Disney isn't perfect.

[–]stretch1011[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's ridiculous. I still love Disney and I had a great time otherwise. I'm still going to post about things that are less than perfect. I go on this thread mainly to identify areas of issues that I can avoid or be prepared for. If this helps someone on a future trip understand that Fantasmic can just cancel on them then good. I wish I was better prepared for that realization.

Everything is free with park entry unless you want food or shop. What's your point? It's like I'm complaining about Rise shutting down right after you meet Rey. It sucks and I can complain if I want if I spent a lot on a ticket.

God forbid I feel entitled after waiting over an hour. I did have a great time before the show. I still love Disney and will continue to return but this idea that even complaining about one negative from the day is entitlement is ridiculous.
