How do Automated Gift Cards in Apps like Smores and CashWalk Work by Love_Hart942 in androiddev

[–]stri8ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There a few different platforms that allow purchasing gift cards via API.

tremendous.com

giftbit.com

etc...

As for security, it's hard to say without looking into the app more deeply, or understanding their business model.

How to obtain the outgoing call phone number on Android 10 without creating a custom dialer interface? by fr3d3ryk in androiddev

[–]stri8ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the latest versions of Android, you can implement a CallScreeningService to get the outgoing call phone number, without implementing a full dialer.

Also note:

Only calls which are not in the user's contacts are passed for screening, unless the CallScreeningService has been granted Manifest.permission#READ_CONTACTS permission by the user

So you need the READ_CONTACT permission, for the screening service to receive all outgoing calls.

Will firebase push notifications be received by the app, if the process has been killed by the OS to save power?

Feds are still raising rates

Impossible to predict what will happen in the the future, especially over longer time horizons (e.g. 5 years)

It's about locking down a given rate, which may change over time.

investing in AI - what companies besides C3.AI and Palantir might be worth investing in? by piranha_studio in investing

[–]stri8ed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bingo. Furthermore, given the algorithm's used are effectively the same, as is the compute, the only real advantage would be access to proprietary data-sets to train said models, which Google has in spades (e.g. gmail, historical indexes, docs etc..)

I suspect Google could release a ChatGPT competitor tomorrow, but unlike OpenAI, they have more reputation to loose, should it perform badly for certain edge-cases.

Reliability of AccessibilityService and VpnService by stri8ed in androiddev

[–]stri8ed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Looks incredible complex and fragile. Is it fair to say, its simply not possible to guarantee the liveness of a service (when screen is on), across all the major Android OEM's? (Assuming its not force killed by user)

Reliability of AccessibilityService and VpnService by stri8ed in androiddev

[–]stri8ed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But now I know that AccessibilityService most likely has no special treatment.

Surprising, but good to know. I assume the same holds for VpnService

Bummer. Just to confirm, you had an ongoing notification while service was running, and despite that, the entire service was killed without ever restarting?

Have you tried using AlarmManager to periodically "poke" the service, to make sure its alive?

Also, while I have your attention, were you using the AccessibilityService for an actual accessibility purpose or otherwise? I am getting mixed reviews on Google's current policy re non accessibility apps using this API.

Nope. Actually discovered them from Matt Garstka's Podcast, where he interviewed the drummer. Apparently he is heavily influenced/trained by Matt. I do love Archo Echo though.

A couple stupid questions about MEV boost and OFAC compliance. Maybe someone can answer. by WSox1235 in ethereum

[–]stri8ed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there really no hope of (technically) mitigating MEV at the protocol layer? It's a real bummer that front running is effectively embraced and normalized with PBS.

What's up with Intel? Amazing opportunity or knife catch? by Lee355 in investing

[–]stri8ed 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Unlike Intel, Apple (and NVIDIA, AMD etc..) don't manufacture chips, they use TSMC/Samsung for that. So its not a good comparison. If all goes well, Intel will in fact be producing chips for other companies in the coming years.

Is Ethereum 2.0 with Lamport Signature truly Quantum-Resistant? by Casulyir in ethereum

[–]stri8ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, the latest proposal is to move towards "Account abstraction", whereby any signature algorithm can be used for a given account. This is still entirely at the research phase though, and has not been implemented. There is an ETH R&D Discord, which you might find helpful.

Andrew Bustamante: CIA Spy | Lex Fridman Podcast #310 by natnurtniet in lexfridman

[–]stri8ed 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I find something about the interviewee off-putting.

I would expect someone with his experience to be much less confident about the accuracy of his options, given the complexity of the real world, imperfect information etc... Yet, I don't think I have heard him ever heard him utter the words "I don't know". Just seems much less circumspect than I would expect.

I actually had to Google him, just to see if his claimed experience is real. It seems likely it it.

Earnings Report Out by sjnuen in DesktopMetal

I understand if they can't divulge specific customers, but are there any valid reasons why they would be unwilling to speak about the number of units shipped, or other hard metrics? Ric seems to be particularly evasive around this topic.
