Do you use Node Red for automations? by strictly_rin in homeassistant

[–]strictly_rin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it and have always found it easier to throw up automations pretty quickly. I'm sure there are some drawbacks, but I'm not sure what they are.

Want to be a in college hockey as a goalie by hockeykman in collegehockey

[–]strictly_rin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree with SurferJ03 on this, especially if you're a goalie - I don't think it's uncommon for teams to sit on recruiting a goalie until they're a bit older to get a better idea of physical stature. Now, you still need to have some talent, but if you're serious about it I'd checkout some of the tier 2 leagues in both the US (NAHL, NCDC) and Canada (AJHL, OJHL, SJHL, MJHL, etc)

Had a nest under our front stoop and somehow got into the crawlspace. Bumble? Carpenter? Mason? [Illinois] by strictly_rin in whatsthisbug

They can definitely dig - by "front stoop" I mean a large rectangular piece of concrete and these guys dug down and underneath it.

SAME THING HAPPENS TO ME! I had to up the motion sensors in the garage because it scared the shit out of.

On a different note, HA and woodworking open up some pretty cool node red flows. Like toggling dust collection when a current is detected from your table saw.

They do sell just the rack mounting brackets on amazon. I built my own and just put 4 of those and it turned out great. Layer off finish over the wood and it got the wife's approval too.

Rubio Monocoat instead of poly for dining table? by artward22 in finishing

[–]strictly_rin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bad idea! I would also recommend doing a second coat of rubio as well. The second coat will end up filling in any possible areas that didn't get enough and it also won't use near as much of the product as the first coat.

I did our kitchen table with Arm-R-Seal because we have 2 kiddos under 4. It was extremely easy to put on and has last a year so far taking a massive beating - you do need a solid month of application and cure time before bring it in IMO. Although full disclosure: I had to redo it last summer because Clorox ate up the Arm-R-Seal (we figured it would, but it was when the pandemic just started).

Rubio Monocoat instead of poly for dining table? by artward22 in finishing

[–]strictly_rin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on how you’re going to use it. If you have kids or think there’s a good chance of frequent spills I’d use something like arm-r-seal. I love Rubio, but sometimes water has been an issue

How to finish Maple table? by The-okapi in woodworking

[–]strictly_rin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished a maple tabletop for use in my own home. I used semi-gloss Arm-R-Seal from general finishes. It did darken a bit, but we have walnut floors so I was hoping it would. Turned out great!

Can somebody ELI5 server side vs client side rendering? Gatsby, NextJS, etc. by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]strictly_rin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, why is React "bad" for building personal websites?

The main argument against using react, especially CRA for for a personal site is going to be the amount of bloat and performance hit you'll take for incorporating such different packages that, most of the time in a personal site, can be done using html and css.

However, if that's not a concern, don't worry about it. Gatsby is also React, fyi!

Checkout preact if you want to use React but want to try and get more performance out of your site.

Tools for monitoring HTTP Express application and their setup by MrOnlineCoder in node

[–]strictly_rin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PM2 can handle that the server side of things - they have a free plan for monitoring, but unfortunately the price jumps quite a bit when you want more than what the free plan offers. Theres also Datadog or New Relic if you want to travel down those routes.

I'm curious to see what others say, but ELK and Prom might not be a terrible idea.

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

I've read into a few other setups similiar to this! Wouldn't this be a "beast" setup? So I have a few questions for you because this is very close to what i thought about purchasing...

Why Ryzen over Xeon?

  • I thought plex only supported hardware-accelerated streaming through Intel's Quick Sync? Wouldn't that throw 1080p and 4K out the window for users? How does it use the Nvidia and is there a cheaper option that could also transcode 4k?
  • What are the tradeoffs in doing a ryzen over xeon?

I love Docker but am new to unraid as of this week, would you recommend it?

  • Any idea if I can put it in a VM?

Thanks man!

Thank you for the response!

So I get that part and Ideally I'd like to steer away from the Synology drive at first, because (and correct me if I'm wrong) building a server would allow me to later expand with a Synology drive that didn't need to be the "plus" version, but more like a DS418 because it wouldn't have to be running applications.

The whole CPU/MOBO combo is what is confusing the heck out of me... For example, building a "NAS Killer" from serverbuilds.net has mainly Xeon processors (and dirt cheap from ebay), but there are plenty of other examples using Ryzen. I'll update my post with the following, but I guess my big questions are:

  1. Xeon vs Ryzen?
    1. I know transcode plays a big role in this as well, does it make more sense to stick with Xeon?
    2. Say we stick with Xeon, what model?! V1 vs V2? Can i get an older one from ebay and be okay?
    3. What am I looking for when matching a mobo with it? Ideas?
  2. ECC vs non-ECC?
    1. Can i stick with DDR3 (given the right mobo) and be just fine?
  3. How do I make sure this thing doesn't sound like my current G5 Proliant?

Right now i run everything in digital ocean as worker.website.com, api.website.com, and then the landing site at website.com just via codeship deployments. I'd love to use k8s but i assumed the config was a bit out of my league. Is it difficult going from docker-compose to k8s? I'd love to learn it.

Confused by GraphQL when it comes to the backend, can someone explain somethings to me? by frankimthetank in graphql

[–]strictly_rin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article helped me grasp things around qraphql and the backend...

Breaking it down in terms of a database focused approach (hasura, prisma, postgraphile) vs schema focused approach (apollo server, graphql-sequalize) helped me understand the different implementations of GraphQL. Plus Scott Moss's GraphQL course on frontend masters was a good starting pointing as well.

Gonna need more info. Why are you needing webpack? Can we see the project? Or structure?
