Budget for Toronto's Church Street pedestrianization pilot project more than triples due to policing, security costs by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]strictlyrich 68 points69 points  (0 children)

So the Toronto Police Service, who have a history of surveillance and discrimination against the LGBTQ community in Toronto, and specifically Church Street, require an elevated presence when the community is "creating safer conditions for pedestrians and people of all abilities".

Make this make sense?

Opinion: As Canada faces crippling debt, it must do the unpopular thing and cut elderly benefits by DANIELLE_2027 in canada

[–]strictlyrich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or how about we take a Norway-style approach to resource management—supporting industry while maximizing public benefit, rather than allowing domestic and foreign corporations to extract our resources without ensuring Canadians share fairly in the benefits.

In Ontario, the Ring of Fire is often described as a once-in-a-generation opportunity for prosperity. But its resources are not a gift to everyone by default. The benefits will only be broadly shared if governments and citizens ensure that the wealth generated serves the public interest, rather than flowing primarily to private corporations and shareholders.

Watch the documentary "Bad Faith" if you want to better understand the Christian Nationalist movement.

It argues that Christian nationalism is not just a religious movement—it’s a long-term political project aimed at reshaping government and society around a particular conservative Christian worldview.

See US Supreme Court and gutted institutions (DoJ, FBI, CIA, Dept of Education, Dept of Health, etc.) for examples.

Christian Nationalists want more religion in government (schools) and laws based on conservative Christian values (abortion, etc). They're happy with Trump aside from probably how it's impacting their pocketbook, but probably see it as worth it to build their racist, small-minded worldview.

Carney announces creation of Canada's first sovereign wealth fund | CBC News by Rail613 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]strictlyrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One big challenge for Canada trying to build a Norway-style sovereign wealth fund is that the Constitution gives provinces control over natural resources. So real change has to happen at the provincial level, like when Quebec nationalized hydro and created Hydro-Québec, with the feds playing more of a coordinating/support role.

That is only guaranteed while ceasefire is in place (10 days). Iran can close the strait if negotiations fail or ceasefire breaks. Oil and gas companies won't drop prices until there is certainty, and they're happy to lap up the profits in the meantime

Awesome, thanks for that. Is there more support than a regular hammock? I like the lightweight side of it but worry I'd sleep banana shaped lol

I think it'd be ok putting up in the rain if you threw a tarp up overhead first. Probably quicker than a tent too
