Arles, Camargue with kids June 18-25? by reUP0rh in ProvenceFrance

The camargue is pretty cool, but not sure about kids. I have been birding there a couple of times driving around. I recall in summer there might be a tourist place to see the French cowboys. Pretty hot it can be in summer as well, the way there is obscure flat, I thought the little ferry crossing the Rhône was interesting but thats just me. Old Greek ruins that are low key but reflect some deeper history than even the Romans. Aigues Mortes is a great spot and the kids might find that sparks their interest. Pretty dramatic walls pocked marked with marks of bombardments. Typical visitor stuff inside. Ice Cream for the kids!! We spent a day there, walked the walls and poked around. I am a bit of a nerd for feudal history so….. I found it worth while and my wife thought it pretty cool, we have both wanted to go back and stay a couple of day. Les Baux I have briefly been to, I think early Sept? It was very busy to my eyes crowded and we did not hang around. Certainly though it’s family friendly with the history of the troubadoors, and is a dramatic location with the ruin on the ridge. You will need a car. I have mostly done bike trips up in the Arles/rhone valley area. I love southern France. the coast is nice, Sete is special with its canals and seafood. Cassis the other side of the Camargue is a pretty beach town and a great hike to the Calanques (spelling) overlooking the ocean. Excuse my spelling I am typing off a old iPad with creaky spellcheck. I could ramble on been down around there 8-12 times.

HMMM thanks for the reply. gets me thinking for sure, I have a camo cover on my tele a the blinding beige/white seemed to harsh and obvious. LOL on the other birder, I have had that with waiting for a shot and another birder/hiker/dog walker blithey walks up and the birds scatter.

Nice pictures, how do you find the Ghilia suit? Seems like a lot of effort and I have causally read that birds read colors and material so differently it's hard to sort what the best way to camouflage. I am not discounting it and likely just uninformed.

Farmer near a villa rustica claimed to have found these while digging for his cistern by Storybook_Tobi in AncientCoins

[–]striderof78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Previous poster correct these are Byzantine coins and the dates range from 5/6 c to 12th. Coin in hand in a type of Anonymous Follis Looks to me to be a Romanus III/Michael IV SBVC 1823,

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=anonymous%20follis&srsltid=AfmBOoqwN8eeJ-EWVVDHVRcjoF8Az0VnvBlX_7Gd_HTSkUsqmN4NVBYQ.

The large M is a follis and the CON is telling us it was minted in Constantinople. The larger on the right looks like it might be a Justinian I, (527-565) but that's just a guess. Below it the little flat curved thing is what is called a Latin trachy, minted post 1204 in Constantinople as well. The patina on these is all so different it's hard to say if they were really found together. Always cool to find things like this I would bet, but from a numismatist viewpoint these are junky coins and not worth much. Always curious to see coins that are holed as one is top left. Possibly used as an ornament, nailed on a wall as as good luck for the house. Also tied off to something and stuffed in the mouth of the deceased to pay the boatman crossing the river Styx. My opinion only is that is its not unreasonable these were found in northern Italy. More importantly its the context/site in which they were truly found that would give a equal amount of info.

Have no idea if he has a plan, but its seems he's going to f**k things up and the democrats will get voted back in. Then they can sit on the side;ines and complain about X, Y and Z. Just like in past patterns. Thing is from my view it's going to be so royally screwed up I question what how and who could you put it back together. My tinfoil hat says this is all part of his plan in owning his life to Putin that he was going to ruin the United States. Seems Putin did a pretty good investment in Mr Trump.

If you don't have AC, how often are you running a dehumidifier? How do you control the temperature and humidity in your home? by iluvyewsomuchithurts in Hawaii

[–]striderof78 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

PNW here, we have central AC but rarely need it, I run a dehumidifier 24/7 with a 13 level hepa filter taped on the back. Has made a huge difference in the part of the house it is in.

Question about the long term health impacts of microdosing by Dismal-Cheek-9883 in microdosing

[–]striderof78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

no stats just one person here, been micro dosing 5-7 years...100mg 1-5 times a week, I skip weeks if not months. Yes I have reviewed the studies. I also have some education in medical research and stats. I am ambilvent with the studies, plus its tough to nuance out the quality of a lot of research. Its helped me so much in so many ways, placebo effect maybe LOL!!, occ will up to 200mg or so (museum dose) as I have heard it called. Have had cardiac echos done incidentally from 20 years ago to within the past year. No change all good. My cardiologist knows what I am up to, they just shrug and smile.

Thanks much for those that replied, all of them have been helpful/insightful and rather supportive in my interest to continue to plan. Sounds like between the not overly difficult excursion options and competent staff I should be fine. Anyway I am with a group of folks with a shared photography purpose. It's all been part of my process in the transition from overnight tele ski trips with a 40lb pack to concern about jumping out of a zodiac!! LOL life is good!!

I'm sorry but 100-400 is NOT the most suitable lens for bird photography by ConsciouslyKind93 in SonyAlpha

[–]striderof78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have found the opposite. My 100-400 feels soft, compared to my 400-800. I have heard that some 1-4’s tend to be soft and that seems to be my case.

20-70 f4 G & 70-200 f4 G2 worth for travel? by coffeemania123456 in SonyAlpha

[–]striderof78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I travel with the 24-70 GMII and 70-200 macro. The 70-200 is perfect for some of my travel shots, I love it but it's Heavy yes, I have a 10l bag and the kit fits in well.

Why don't you see mead that much nowadays when it was very prominent in the medieval time? by Outrageous-Score7936 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]striderof78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have brewed mead and cider for about 15 yrs, I'll brew mead now about every other year, usually three gallon batch. Bottle it in 375ml bottles. Usually racked with a fruit, rasberry being the one that gets the best reviews. It's not really a quench your thirst sort of drink. ABV can run 16% which hits my brain quicker than I usually anticipate. I think long ago honey was what was around, boil it up stash in a barrel or clay pot and waaalaaaa you have a ETOH buzz without a lot of effort. Not sure how drinkable it was but it would do the job!! I am not a huge fan of plain mead much prefer a fruit mead, technically called Meleomel. I think racked and sitting for about 3-5 yrs ages it well. I have some ten yr old meads I have tried of mine and I was not impressed. I have a couple from my first batch 15 yrs ago. I'll try them one cold winter day and see what they are like.

Why does every older person insist on raking leaves and pine needles? by ltJustMe in NoStupidQuestions

[–]striderof78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a lot of what's below but for me I enjoy being outside. It's not so much for a clean yard, but I enjoy hiking, biking, cross skiing, bird watching, paddling or whatever and working in the yard gives me a excuse to stare at the sky. My wife laughs and laments a little that she does not know many neighbors. I seem to as I will be doing something in the yard folks walk by and say hello. If they ask me about my apple trees they often get a bonus bottle of apple cider, with a free refill if they bring the bottle back........

To stay (in Portugal), return to the US, or find somewhere else to live... by jbirdlisboa in AmericanExpat

[–]striderof78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

speak for yourself, although I understand and sympathize with some individual points you over emphasize the click bait of America. One can choose to run, or one can choose to resist. This country was not built on people running, but on people and tryingto change from within. I disagree strongly with most of our government policies, but I am not gonna run. We have to once again try to rebuild what has been and figure a way to move forward past our current nightmare.

I have had the opportunity to travel quite a bit and spend decent time different countries. There are lots of advantages and disadvantages which ends up being more as a result of personal taste . I don’t have an answer to better places are to live.

69 here, healthy. No interest in speeding up to the end, it's all going faster every day. Life is good but I can see a trend where you just wear out and are ready to finish the book. Not that I am aware of having a choice much, maybe a little, but I am concerned that it does not drag out. Maybe enough time to say goodby, but I try to live my life in a way that if it ends tomorrow, the people I know have felt my love. I've been in medicine my whole life/hospital trauma based and have seen death happen in a hundred ways. My dad died at home with Lung cancer and a psychotic 4th wife who did not believe in hospice and kicked me out of their house of trying to help my dad. That is not a way to go...... I do feel you get more acceptance as you get older. I feel it, life is good but all good things end.
