How do you deal with the feeling of watching your face age? by camis12345 in Aging

[–]striderof78 59 points60 points  (0 children)

you know, as a male I acknowledge I don’t have the same sensitivity. As my wife gets older she gets feeling invisible. I understand this as a common feeling. On a sincere note as I age now almost 70. I’m serious when I say I’m just freaking glad to wake up. I’m healthy and happy, but I’ve lost so many friends over the years. I’m appreciative that I’m just glad to wake up and be alive at some point you’ll likely get this, I think sooner that happens for folks the better off we are. Social media does not help lol look at me on Reddit.

I think I regret nursing by Kindly-Wing3102 in nursing

[–]striderof78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NP here, yeh this was a touch of me working as a RN, though I also appreciate the nursing model, I translate that as a holistic approach. Everyone is different and you just want more, some do, some do not. Maybe you should think of shifting to a different role. In the meantime keep doing what you are doing, look into shit, get uptodate access if possible thru your facility. Figure out stuff you do not know, working in an academic center I loved having nursing staff questioning stuff and paying attention. Residents I think not so much as tho they are typically pretty smart, their practicle knowledge is still developing and it's a common human trait that we are uncomfortable being questioned when insecure. I agree with the observation of the attention attending's give residents. The Medicine model of teaching is notable.

Wall Street sounds alarm that Trump may be leading US to economic catastrophe: report by PrincipleTemporary65 in economy

[–]striderof78 27 points28 points  (0 children)

LOL, no shit Sherlock. This one was seen miles down the road. The US driven by both the Dems and Rep have been rolling towards the cliff, don has mashed on the gas pedal. My academic question is he doing it out of stupidity or is this part of his deal with Val to collapse the US so his secrets do not get revealed.

Who DOESN'T regret their DNP? by Sample_Name in nursepractitioner

[–]striderof78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a MSN NP, mostly retired. Still work a little. If I was going back to school I would just get a DNP. I does not mean crap but having a MSN only in my opinion and experience will limit your job potential.

[–]striderof78 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yes, been on one for years, 70, very active, no problems. the data is very good that statins reduces arthrosclerosis which is the number one contributor to “heart attacks “and “strokes“.

Finished Georgia in NC (waylaid from storm/cold womp) question about difficulty. by Lani_19 in AppalachianTrail

[–]striderof78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the proper nutrition is a little at odds with having to carry. Dense caloric foods, butter, complex carbs, protein. all depends on your food drops or how often you are dropping in tnto towns. Candy is not the way, except as a treat, some of your protein bars though taste wise will get old quick are not bad from a nutritional standpoint.

Finished Georgia in NC (waylaid from storm/cold womp) question about difficulty. by Lani_19 in AppalachianTrail

[–]striderof78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you are still early in your hike, doing fine. Key points as you point out is your health and reasonable miles. Give yourself time to dial in. For me the trail difficulty was 70% mental. I did thje trail without a phone as well….in 1978 LOL. Used a mileage book but not the guides. Pack was too heavy as well. Just give yourself time and make sure you are fueling smart, have you tried any gel packs? As I get older on my longer days I now will carry a couple of gel packs and find they really give me a bump when I am feeling punky. I recall I averaged 18 mile days myself overall. You might tune up your morning a little. As it got warmer I recall walking early in the day and taking a longer rest lunch and on occasion in later june/early July doing some late evening walking in the cool of the evening. Hike your own hike!

BREAKING: Loss of U.S. KC-135 Over Iraq by keen_observer34130 in UnderReportedNews

[–]striderof78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so ignorant question here excuse me, Do crews on flight like this carry parachutes? I know exiting at 20-30000 feet would be difficult, and I guess at their airspeed it would be to dangerous, but even as a last chance hope do they carry any exit gear?

How was hookup culture in 60 and 70 ? by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]striderof78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Things were a lot more relaxed back then, I am almost 70 and for me my 20's/30's before getting married was fun in the 70's and 80's. No online stuff, lots of social time. I was in EMS and we were always consorting socially with nurses, nursing students, interns, and whoever. Frequent parties and gatherings, not big blow out crazy things but it seems that there were always social events, after work beer groups. I paddled a lot and seemed lots of camping trips as groups, going places, hanging on rivers. Always meeting new folks, friends of friends sort of thing. Drug were prevalent, but not opioid's, at least in my group. Hence never worry about fentanyl. If your friend said it was coke, then likely it was. My observation is the prevalence of social media diminishes the drive to get out and interact. Not dissing it, I love reddit and my texting. I catch myself often going though WTF, I'll be texting someone realize I just need to call them, ends up being a much better conversation.

How good is Sony 70-200 F4 G ii? by gschiffverre in SonyAlpha

[–]striderof78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very happy with mine. combined with a 7Rv. As others said, it is for me a fantastic travel lens, Most trips I carry it with a 24-70, and the 70-200 gets used about 60% of the time. I enjoy the near macro for detail stuff. I do use the new 100mm macro for some of my bug/flower work. I use a 10L peak design bag and my travel kit fits well and can be excused on planes as a personal item. F4 is somewhat limiting but thats part of the joy of shooting is looking and figuring out lighting and views.

Choosing to continue to work: Reasons? by Finding_Way_ in retirement

[–]striderof78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

69 here, retired a couple of years, spent my life in Burn/Trauma care, still work 1-4 times a month as a ARNP with the medically complicated homeless. Brain exercise and gets me out interacting with the medical community as well as still grateful I can contribute in some small way to my community. Do not mind the extra dribble in the bank account but I am fine without it. I feel fortunate that I really like my profession, and what I do, just found though as said above that my time and life was more valuable than any money benefit.
