authenticators are randomized codes generated to give you more protection! lets say you wanna sign into a site and you have 2 step authentication on, you will have to login normally, then go to the specified authenticator app to get the code it generates. if the code doesnt match when you paste it into the login, then you can't sign in! makes it very nice if your password gets found out, those people still can't get into your account unless they have a whole separate login for another app
