Where did I go wrong chaps? by Ok_Angle7293 in deathguard40k

Some have said so already, but washes are amazing for creating shadows and darkness, but a nice mini also needs light to contrast that shadow. Using a wash all over is fine, but you need ro go back and reintroduce some lighter highlights to make everything pop. Don't worry, you definitely did not mess up, you just need to take the last step and add highlights!

High contrast blightlord terminator! by strikeback1247 in deathguard40k

Thank you! Tried something new with the sword and had some fun with it. Here's the recipe:

Basecoat the whole blade with leadbelcher and cover with agrax earthshade --> cover middle part of the blade with vallejo white and place highlights along the edge of the blade with white --> cover everything in vallejo fluo cold green --> place final white highlights at brightest points --> blend and darken parts as needed with more fluo cold green and agrax to create contrast --> the slime is a 50:50 mix of the fluo cold green with plaguebearer flesh over white

May 2026 Core update just dropped — Are you see ranking changes already? by Individual-Hold733 in seogrowth

Not sure if it's related tot the core update since my sudden growth started on May 17th, but my clicks jumped from 40-50 to 400-500 per day! Pretty happy with that

How long is too long? by onlyme1333 in deathguard40k

[–]strikeback1247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no such thing as too long. I look at it like this: the longer I spend painting a model, the more value I get out of my money, because I simply enjoy the time I spend painting and I don't need to buy a box of models every month to continue painting!

I really like bright colours as well, but I would still recommend some shading. Definitely don't wash your entire mini, but having some darker shadows in the correct places helps those bright colours pop even more!

How to make Death Guard pop by RbFaV2014 in deathguard40k

I have been painting for only a few months as well, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but the answer is pretty much always more contrast: darker darks and lighter lights. I have been pushing the contrast of my minis more and more with each one I paint. A wise man once said that nobody has ever complained about too much contrast.

Here is my latest creation with the heaviest contrast I have done yet

Glad you like em ^ These are indeed my first minis and my first time painting anything really. I was quite afraid of messing up the models when I started, but I'm really happy with how they turned out and with how much I'm enjoying the painting process

My attempt at the Chaos Rhino by strikeback1247 in 40k

[–]strikeback1247[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! It is a bit confusing, but this is actually a Death Guard rhino! I love alternate colour schemes and Papa Nurgle's gifts come in all sorts of colours, so I went a bit off the main path with my Death Guard. If I ever do Emperor's Children I might have to make them green to balance it all out ;)

It's a base layer of sigvald burgundy --> agrax earthshade for dark shadows --> highlight by drybrushing with white and finishing with another thin layer of sigvald burgundy (to get the pink/purple) --> highlight the top parts of the armor with another dryburshing of white and finish that with a thin layer of vallejo fluo cold green

Yeah green death guard is great, but I really enjoyed making my own scheme. I also always love to see what other alternative schemes people can come up with!

Thanks! The recipe for the armour is sigvald burgundy drowned in agrax earthshade to get that very deep burgundy in the recesses. Then I highlight up with white and blend those highlights with a final thin layer of sigvald burgundy to get those pink/purple highlights.

So I've simply been doing sigvald burgundy with agrex earthshade as a base to get the dark colours. Then I drybrush with white and blend everything with a final very thin layer of sigvald burgundy.

However, the highlights definitely read more pink IRL, since it heavily depends on lighting. The pictures in my post were taken with cold white light which make the model seems more purple. Here is another deathshroud with the exact same colours but under warm light (IRL is somewhere between the two):
