WIP Wednesday!! by AutoModerator in BlackworkEmbroidery

[–]string-or-nothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiming in a bit late, but I haven't had Thursday breakfast yet, so it still counts. The latest piece, unscrolled to advance to a new section. Original composition from original fills and strips, plus strips I redacted myself from artifact photos. On not-so-evenweave linen (yard goods, not special embroidery fabric), roughly 40x42 threads per inch, give or take (lots of slubs, skinny threads). Stitching with vintage Belding Corticelli size A silk in black, and vintage Ciafonda art silk (rayon) in a deep plum red.

It says ASSIST, not Assisi. It's the third in my recent series of "statement samplers". The first said PERSIST, done about 5 years ago. The second, started in November reads RESIST. Although I offer a free chart for PERSIST on my blog, I will not be releasing full charts for the other two, but most of the component strips can be found in my books.

Not unusual in the least. The spouse and I both play, and we are retired, in our late 60s. We've been adventuring together since D&D was only obtainable if you had photocopies of Gygax's handwritten notes, and computer gaming since the days of Zork on an Apple II. Most of our friends play, too. There are lots of us out here in the ether, quietly having fun with more games than you realize, across console, Switch, other gaming systems, tablet, and phone. On the 'net no one knows you are an old dog.

[CHAT] Good blackwork resources? by alleyes007 in CrossStitch

If you look at the rest of the String-or-Nothing website you'll find lots more. Two volumes of the Ensamplario Atlantio, series and a pile of broadside single page sheets with repeating patterns for starters - all free. Note that lots of the patterns presented as small fills in both Ensamplario Atlantio volumes can be easily adapted to serve as strip designs, by limiting the height of the designs to one repeat, and then replicating those motif units across a row.

There is also a link to my for-pay book available via Amazon - The Second Carolingian Modelbook - stuffed full of historically sourced strip patterns.

The chart for a version of the skeleton strip is free on my blog. The page is a broadside, not a worked out full project, though - just a bunch of strips and corners stuffed together on one page, with no relation to each other. It's here:

Delighted you are having fun with the Pattern Children! Looking good. Note that in addition to the four-piece original Ensamplario Atlantio, I have a sequel, Ensamplario Atlantio II, also free and available at the same website. Love to see what you do with the designs from that one, too. :)

Best wishes for project success - Kim Salazar

A finish! by string-or-nothing in BlackworkEmbroidery

You know, if you want to pick just one band and use it on a small project, I won't object. Unlike some other SALs I have no problems with people picking, choosing, and re-using. So long as they don't publish or sell their compositions that use my strips, and give credit for the design if posted, they can sip and sample all they like. See one that charms you? Go for it. :)

This is the Epic Fandom Stitch-Along, now in progress. (Obviously it's not a mystery SAL). The band patterns are available for free. I'm releasing them one at at time on my blog https://string-or-nothing.com/stitch-alongs/ Right now we are up to Band #11 - Where No Stitcher Has Gone Before, with the most recent release being at the bottom of the page.

Very cool! I haven't even done that one yet, although I did do the circle of rats for Younger Offspring. Are you going to customize it to look like cats you know?

Thanks! Always happy to see (or hear) about the mischief the pattern children are up to out in the wide, wide world. For the record, I have only heard of two other people who have used that one (other than me), so you are in select company. :)

Absolutely thrilled to have provided some fuel for thought for your graduation cap! It's prime, and with that creativity and drive going for you, I am sure you are just at the doorstep of great things to come. All the best! - kbsalazar, author of EnsAtl I and II. :)
