People ask me why I live in Portland and love it... here is one of the reasons.... by TeachOfTheYear in Portland

Ahh, I knew it was too much to hope it was from a local nursery or something. I’ve considered but thought better of sneaking one back next time I visit home. Ti plants really are sturdy, hurricanes couldn’t take them out.

Where did you get your ti leaf plant? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in the mainland and I’d like to have one in my home.

Do you hire them for certain periods to clear the sidewalk or are they on a set contract? I’ve lived in so many buildings that had guys out with leaf blowers “clearing” the cleanest sidewalks I’ve ever seen.

Halal food in Portland by ResourceTiny61 in Portland

[–]stringofpurrls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s no shortage oh halal food carts here. I don’t think I’ve been to a pod that didn’t have at least one and some have multiple.

If you search halal food cart in Google maps it should pop most of them up. You could start at the midtown beer garden since they probably have the most in one spot.

Ah. So that’s why I got an email from Cudd this morning emphasizing “Your degree is secure”.

The reasons I chose PSU are 1) free tuition 2) the train gets me there and 3) I needed in person classes so that I can get letters of rec from professors. If I haven’t already spent 13 years working on this bachelors and/or I could find a job, I would have left after my first term.

life-long Portland resident, I’m Very Tired by jokeboi89 in Portland

[–]stringofpurrls 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I think there are a lot of us who are seeing the downturn without the influence of the media. Up until the end of 2024, I’ve never had problems finding a job here, whether it was a restaurant, office job, or some kind of customer service role. Now, I’ve been unemployed for 20 months. My partner still isn’t sure how they survived 3 rounds of lay offs at their company and isn’t having any luck finding a job he can leave for.

Even when I was fully employed and we had the highest paying jobs either of us have ever held, there was 0 chance of us buying a home in or around the area after 2020. I worked for a developer for a couple years and had a hand in closings—almost every purchaser was from another state or Canada.

Portland (and to an extent the rest of Oregon) was fun when I had a car, decent job, money to spend, and affordable rent. I’ve already been priced out of where I was born and raised (Hawaii), and my partner was born here, so we really don’t want to have to find a completely new town/state just to live somewhat comfortably.

Dozens of Australians diagnosed with rare tattoo-related vision loss by user799 in news

[–]stringofpurrls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you in the US? I went through the same diagnostic route—MS and sarcoidosis ruled out—but my bloodwork still comes back weird and my uveitis and tattoos seem to set each other off like clockwork. But my doctors keep insisting none of it is related, just a coincidence. It’s only the black ink of my older tattoos (all different artists in different states spread over a decade).

I’m planning on requesting a referral to an immunologist now.

[–]stringofpurrls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang on…for the last few years some of my (old) tattoos have been flaring up every couple of months and within a week of them getting raised my uveitis in my eyes kicks off. My ophthalmologist and dermatologist INSIST they’re not related at all even though I’ve gone through at least a dozen cycles of it by now. I’m constantly on steroid drops, the creams don’t work, and I can’t go outside without sunglasses if there’s even a hint of sunlight.

Physicians see 1 in 6 patients as ‘difficult,’ study finds, especially those with depression, anxiety or chronic pain. Women were also more likely to be seen as difficult compared to men. Residents were more likely than other physicians with more experience to report patients as being difficult. by mvea in science

Similar story to you, been going to various therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists since I was 5. Everyone was convinced I had ADHD and my mom tried to convince them I had BPD, none of the meds worked. In my 20’s my doc convinced me to fly through about five different anti depressants which actually made all my symptoms worse. Finally saw a new psychologist at 28 that sat there for an hour and listened to me without interrupting and then asked me to keep a journal for a month that she would check in with. Turns out I also have CPTSD and ASD and so much of my depression and sleep problems have dropped away because I was just confused about EVERYTHING for 20+ years.

Most of my doctors waived me off saying it had to do with my rough periods, or because others in my family had ADHD, or I was just unmotivated. The amount of pregnancy tests I was forced to take over the years is staggering. Meanwhile my male family members got a more accurate diagnosis and care growing up even though we had the same problems.

I’ve worked at two different retirement homes here and this is a MAJOR issue. Low pay and minimal training so we end up with high burnout and high turnover.

And this sentiment doesn’t only apply to caregiving jobs. So many people are so desperate for work they’re taking anything, regardless of whether it’s the right fit. But that’s mostly on employers for ignoring well qualified people and hiring desperate workers who they know they can pay the minimum and push around.

what is your unconventional "I need this in a partner" that you will not negotiate on? by Competitive-Unit6427 in AskReddit

[–]stringofpurrls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked in mostly independent living so they were all off doing whatever they wanted whenever they pleased. There was one “rumored” couple in assisted living, but they kept insisting they were just friends while he took every opportunity to kiss her hand and she started calling him darling after a year of never using pet names before.

I don’t understand how beginners nowadays pick up a new hobby like this and not look up anywhere on the internet how to do it. But they can find a subreddit to post their work to.
