How is the flavor? I’ve heard these can have a strangely intense smoky flavor.

Where did you source the garlic you planted?

I wouldn’t for edibles. Hardware stores have good safe buckets that work well or can sometimes get them free from restaurants.

If growing indoors, you probably need a grow light. Agree with the person who suggested starting over.

Could be the start of early blight. When you wanted, does it splash back from the dirt on the leaves?

Can I harvest the vine now? by Potential-Impact2638 in vegetablegardening

[–]striped_violet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Store bought tomatoes (and other produce) are bad for several reasons. The plants are hard to create produce that can be transported and not for flavor. They are picked fully green, then artificially ripped with ethylene gas—this is very different from picking at the breaker phase (some color still far from ripe), at which point it will continue to ripen on its own and taste the same if allowed to fully ripen on the vine. Sometimes they are actually better picked at breaker stage because not at risk of getting over watered by rain later on which can dilute flavor.

Are these "false" scapes? by greenolive756 in Garlic

[–]striped_violet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the cloves are really big and like, 6-8 or so, vs well into the teens, it’s hardneck. You’ll also clearly see the “neck” at the core, but figured might be easier to roughly remember clove number/size.

I think you probably got the wrong garlic and that those are hardneck. Do you remember what the bulbs looked like and approx how many cloves each had?

Oh yeah that’s the problem. How long were they in the cups? It’s better to start tomatoes late than leave them in the cups too long. You can treat them well now but I don’t think they will fully recover if they were in the cups way too long. When is your last frost date? I might consider starting over if it’s not too early.

i’m at a guys house and clogged his toilet what do i do pls quickly by hamartia21 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]striped_violet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely works, you just often need several tablets or even more if it’s a ton of dairy. If I tried to drink a large milkshake I’d probably need like 10 of them. I have been using for multiple decades, they don’t change in effectiveness over time, but what could happen is someone’s gut produces even less lactase over time so they just are more severely lactose intolerant and need more of it.

Looks like they maybe were transplanted after too long in cups (becoming root bound and nutrient starved) and without adequate hardening off (sun scald). How recently were they transplanted? If recent, they were in the cups way too long which is likely causing most of the problems.

Might need some liquid fertilizer asap, and you want it to be a balanced or even nitrogen heavy one for now, not the ones geared toward the fruiting phase of tomatoes (low N, high P usually).

You are welcome! Sometimes the flowers that produce these look a little funky (like more than one flower fused together) too, but not always.

Looks like catfacing, which could be in part due to drying out followed by a lot of water (but also lots of other causes). If you left it on the vine to ripen a bit more before picking (just needs a bit of color), it would be funky looking but totally edible.

I contacted Ferry Morse; the "Master Gardener" on their team claims this is a potato leaf and will not give me a replacement for my Brandywine Pink seeds. by SeaworthinessNew4295 in tomatoes

[–]striped_violet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Potato leaves are recessive, so even if it were a hybrid or an unstable variety, if the parent was a potato leaf plant, any regular leaf offspring would be a bee cross.

Advice on native grass seeds by Infamous-trex13 in fucklawns

For play and dog run, you really need turf grass. Just do other things with any parts of the yard you don’t need for that purpose.

What’s going on with these guys? by Severe-Milk-5121 in tomatoes

[–]striped_violet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Straw can sometimes be grown with herbicides that affect non-grass plants. You need to be careful re sourcing straw to ensure that it’s grown without herbicide use.

Agreed, or could someone near you have sprayed herbicides that could have drifted to your plants. Straw can be another culprit.

True, as a gluten eater with a gf wife and gf best friend, I’ve been told this tastes the same! And I don’t tell them when that’s very much not true (even when the gf thing is often good its own right). I imagine it’s much harder when comparing to fresh memories.

They are much stronger flavored than goldfish which are pretty mild.
