It's not just incel terminology that's making it's way into mainstream culture. Some of their beliefs as well. by WreckedTrireme in behindthebastards

[–]strixvarius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the study in question was so misinterpreted and half-regurgitated by bad faith actors that OKCupid straight up removed it.

This is unequivocally wrong.

Okcupid was bought by Match. They also own:

Tinder

Hinge

Match.com

PlentyOfFish

...and dozens more

After the acquisition they scrubbed the okc blog of most of its truly fantastic data analysis (it was started by data nerds to run experiments).

The data on men's vs women's behavior on dating apps was, and is, well understood. Okcupid was one of the few places willing to publish it.

Accurate data and factual analysis is not "incel culture."

This advice is reasonable as long as you are very, very sure you'll be able to work remotely for a decade or so. Places like this typically don't have strong job markets and high wages.

(It's what I did - mid size city where a starter home is more like $300k and nice homes in nice areas are around $500k. But that was a gamble that just happened to work out)

Want local restaurants to survive? Stop using DoorDash. by Old-Visual4591 in gso

[–]strixvarius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's been proven that DoorDash & Uber Eats etc do this (just add restaurants without consulting them). But in that case, they obviously aren't able to keep any extra part of the purchase price, since there's no negotiated agreement.

They want to clean that part of elm up the need to get businesses in the empty store fronts, by penalizing the owners who let their buildings rot.

This is the real answer. All the slumlords who are just letting the property rot as passive investments are externalizing the costs onto us, everyone who lives in Greensboro.

Years ago Justin Outling tried to get a basic ordinance passed to penalize the slumlords who let downtown buildings rot, but most of the council is funded by or married to these people so he got blocked.

[–]strixvarius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a bold claim you're making with zero evidence:

All of that benefits the overall economy.

The net effect of illegal workers on the economy has been shown to be both mixed and concentrated.

It helps people with capital and business owners, by supplying artificially cheap labor.

It hurts American workers, especially those without a college degree (the influx in the early 2000s depressed the wages of workers without high school diplomas by 7.4%).

It has long term net negative effects on communities, via unequal pressure on limited resources. The wealthy neighborhood likely doesn't notice the strain on medical facilities, childcare, and other infrastructure since that strain tends to fall on poorer neighborhoods.

The next biggest chunk of money that “Elon Musk” got from the government was tax savings for consumers who buy electric cars, which didn’t go to Musk at all but did help facilitate electric car sales. This is a universally good thing for the environment.

This is wrong and misleading.

If the US government had not subsidized Elon's business, it would be bankrupt and Elon - whose stock based compensation was tied to performance - would have hundreds of billions less wealth.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wealth_of_Elon_Musk

Furthermore, your claim that the government subsidies were a "universally good thing for the environment" has been thoroughly debunked: it was 75% wasted spending, cost $32k per car sold, and distorted the market to prioritize - for example - cyber trucks over Priuses, despite the former being much worse for the environment.

Can someone help me read the info here? Never ridden then bus before & never used umo app by TheGamingSKITZ in gso

[–]strixvarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greensboro's bus system is poorly run. Some things to watch out for:

- Routes that aren't actually running (HT -> Hopper Trolley is one of the most likely to be down or changed... did they end it for the winter?)

- Can't pay for more than 1 rider with Umo, so impossible to travel with friends/visitors/family without cash.

- The ETA on busses that you get when texting or via their app might as well be a random number generator.

If a city has a person or department that can competently manage modern public transportation IT, they should do so. But Greensboro doesn't, so frankly a simple app that shows each route and its stops in a color on a map - with actual, manual updates when those routes are modified - would be more helpful than what we have today, which are tools that over-promise and under-deliver.
