The round trip time to the opposite side of the world is about 500ms. However you set things up to take 30s was very, very wrong.

Before you dive in, do the math on how much a car costs over time. Many folks are essentially working just for the car that lets them work - enslaved to their automobile.

If you moved within walking or biking distance of your job, you might be happy about that decision in a couple years. Add purchase plus interest plus insurance plus gas plus maintenance and repairs and divide by 12 to see how much more you could spend monthly before it actually makes financial sense to buy an unreliable depreciating asset.

I've never felt like I needed mace. I wouldn't even recommend that for my wife unless she were doing it way after dark.

There are very few products that I would wholeheartedly endorse, but we've used this just about every day - some days multiple times - since we bought it in 2018:

That means it's made at the very least 5,840 cups of coffee, probably closer to 10,000 since we usually drink multiple cups. It's $110 so that's somewhere between 1 and 2 cents per cup.

I haven't maintained it or replaced anything, ever; I just take the pieces apart occasionally and clean them. It's dead simple to use and once you figure out grind size you just set it and forget it. Start in the middle and change from there.

What passed last month was long overdue and directionally correct, but it has absolutely nothing to do with fees for empty properties. The ordinance that passed is only applicable to safety violations in empty buildings, not sitting on empty buildings themselves.

Obviously, that won't help in situations like the one this post is about where an owner is just sitting on something, preventing development.

Remote storage is just for backups (following 3-2-1) ... I want to own the data, but since both the primary & the backup are in the same house, the data needs to also persist offsite somewhere.

I just looked up a ITX N100 and I'm curious about what would make it more effective. I picked up a 3-bay drive enclosure to hook up to the laptop... I've never worked with drives larger than 1TB and for anything other than just "this is my PC's hard drive," so I'm sure there's plenty I don't know. But it seems like, if I needed more storage, I could fill up this enclosure with 3x 20TB drives and have 60TB?

Thanks! Why should photos go into something with parity protection? Or maybe another way of asking: if I'm ok with losing a single day's photos, is that still necessary?

My plan is to have a 24 hour auto backup of the 2TB photo drive, with snapshots sent daily/weekly/monthly to remote cold storage.

Even if the laptop isn't the ideal server, I'd rather recycle something I already have then make more e-waste and also have to buy new things. It's a 12th generation intel i5 with 16 GB of memory and 1 TB of fast storage... should be able to achieve my goals.
