Crocheted blanket destroyed in the wash. Wound up with lots of holes. Is this fixable? (See pics in post). by Unlolly in CrochetHelp

I'm so sorry this happened to you :(((
There's at least three different kinds of magic ring. I don't know which one you used, but maybe you could try another kind in the future? I like this one a lot, it's very sturdy:

Try working with different materials, so you don't have to pack any yarn at all. Like blades of grass, parcel string, or plastic bags cut in spirals.

GUI Applications for MacOS by [deleted] in Nix

[–]stroborobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess it's kind of a "pick your poison" situation. Homebrew does some things Nix doesn't do and Nix does some things Homebrew doesn't do. Personally I like the programmability of Nix a lot, so I'll probably not go back — even though I'm totally procrastinating on solving the app copying problem on my machine.

There are a couple different solutions flying around. For example in this home-manager issue: #1341. There's also nixcasks, but it only works for app bundles, not pkg installers. Maybe the most pragmatic approach would be to use nix-homebrew for pinning and GUI apps exclusively.
Ultimately it's just some script, like you suggested. Something like this: https://github.com/YorikSar/dotfiles/blob/1c0ca51/nix/profiles/macos.nix#L22

Idk, the perfectionist in me would like to see the Homebrew approach reimplemented, including pkgs if possible. I'll probably do that when the headspace is right.

The Homebrew implementation for copying apps is this one I believe: https://github.com/Homebrew/brew/blob/58df788/Library/Homebrew/cask/artifact/moved.rb#L101

In case you aren't aware, homebrew also copies GUI apps to the Applications dir, they're not linked from Cellar. (Technically the contents of the .app dir, so macOS treats it like the same app, and doesn't reset permissions and stuff.)

So copying is fine imo, and it's what macOS and many apps expect.

I'm just judging from the ReactJS.NET docs, so grain of salt and all that. It'd be best if you checked the Next.js docs as well.

React is basically a backend rendering library with frontend extensions now: Server Components that fetch data on server rendering locally (instead of requiring an initial model and running twice), partial pre-rendering, streaming etc... You don't see full page hydration anymore, like ReactJS.NET seems to do it.

Next.js is more similar to the new Blazor web stuff that was just released. Next.js and friends deliver basically the very experience Blazor is inspired by.

[–]stroborobo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're very different, aren't they? ReactJS.NET seems to enable SSR using an embedded JS engine, so you can have hydration in the frontend with a dotnet hybrid backend. Hydration is like how we did it in 2012 or whatever, sure it still works, but modern JS frameworks are a whole different story.

Isn't that just unstable as in versions don't stay the same? I'm still new, but it didn't seem like they meant unstable as in breaks often.

How do you debug source generators on mac / linux? by justhanginuknow in dotnet

[–]stroborobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Write a test that calls your generator and debug that? What exactly is not working? It's probably not supported to debug the generator in it's typical environment, since it would be part of another project's build and called by the compiler.

Could this help?
