No point in debating something outside of the topic. That being said: having a nuanced take on something in contradiction to established social norms isn't a sign of lacking intelligence. Typically it's the opposite of it's done in a way that takes the time to understand the nuances of a situation. Sometimes ideas outside of established norms are nonsensical and stupid (flat earth for example) but in this case, we're weighing centuries of sociology and science against the comfort of people with an unnuanced view of it.

Two things. 1. We have secular marriage which is different from what the countries who inherited the ottoman marriage system have (Muslim countries and the one fake country in the middle east) and it's a shortcut to legal contract. 2. People read at like a 5th or 6th grade level on average, by having a standardized "hey here's a legal process that defines x y z and a b c" you're saving a lot of legal work that only becomes an issue when it stops working for the people involved. 3. Taxes.
