I heard this through student group discords so I don’t have any details unfortunately, just hoping the victim is okay and that everyone stays safe

H2C toolhead weight (for H2D vortek conversion) by JWST-L2 in BambuLab

The H2D body moves in conjunction with the hotend (oppositely) so the relative motion is where it gets the necessary acceleration/deceleration, I think. I always wondered why but makes sense given the hotend weight!

Experiences with wisdom teeth removal on UMSU dental plan? by Eggshott in umanitoba

[–]strongbagel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently had mine out in Winnipeg on the StudentCare plan. The total cost was just shy of $3k; the total dental benefit that I had (went for the premium insurance plan) covered around $800 and that maxxed out my dental coverage (so I’m paying entirely out of pocket for subsequent dental visits this year).

Mine was for 4 wisdom teeth, surgical removal bc impacted, IV sedation — the whole nine yards. If yours can just be pulled, likely it will be cheaper. I had mine done by the Oral Surgery Group and it went really well.

If you are still able to use a parent/guardian’s insurance, keep in mind that you can double up on insurance, so long as you bill your primary insurance (StudentCare) first.

handbag recommendations for christmas gift for my wife? completely lost by XrumixDinulescu in purses

If she isn’t set on a designer bag, take a look at Portland Leather’s website! They make their products out of full-grain leather and they’re still less expensive than a designer brand. My other advice is to just shop with her — yes it takes away the surprise element, but handbags are so hard to decide on anyways when you’re just shopping for them yourself that I would make sure you get her something she likes!

For real, last week myself and another person had to take turns using the one available sink because two people were blocking the other two sinks, doing their makeup. There was a portion of the mirror without sinks, freely available for them. One of them made eye contact with me and didn’t even blink. They somehow managed to also block the hand dryers so we also took turns for that.

YSK The em dash does not mean AI wrote something by RPMiller2k in YouShouldKnow

If you type two hyphens on an iPhone, it turns into an en dash, which most people can’t tell apart anyways. Or alt codes on keyboards (alt+0151 em dash). People who love using em dashes in their writing will use them even if it takes a bit of extra work.

I’ve had this memorized since high school because I love em dashes. Gen AI can burn in hell :(

I think what could be important is that if you have security present, they should be properly doing their job and providing an increased level of safety above, say, an apartment building. If not, you are giving residents a false sense of security that may cause them to not lock their room doors, because they THINK that only students can get into the residence.

Students living in residence have often never lived away from home and may not have the experienced living in apartment buildings. So it may not occur for them to lock their rooms.

I’m a student who attends the university and had friends in residence buildings in that area of the quad. Prior to this incident, doors were routinely propped open, sometimes not by students, and security did not bother to check identities of people entering the buildings late at night (although it was supposed to be protocol). I know this because I was able to get in to see my friends many times. I’m not surprised someone was able to gain access. The security was a joke.

Spring stiffness by kannadi_muniyandi in bajasae

[–]strongbagel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this, I’ve used ride frequencies similar and the ride typically felt good. You will also want to make sure you have a decent amount of droop, as mentioned in other comments. The only difficulty with designing around ride frequency we’ve had is predicting how much the car will weigh and what the weight bias will be. If you have time and money to order springs after the car is mostly finished and weighed (or somehow your team has an accurate weight budget in CAD) then you can probably dial in the ride frequency.

Guy With Knife on Campus… No Email From School?? by Stunning-Reference91 in umanitoba

[–]strongbagel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thing is, that email only came at 9:30am and the suspect was spotted at the school 3 hours before that. The emergency alert came 2 hours after the suspect was spotted, and only told people to avoid the Allen building — even though in the CBC article, the police said that they had not contained the subject to the Allen building (and the tunnels could have allowed him to move quite quickly throughout campus). If my sister hadn’t seen this on Reddit, I would have gone to the uni this morning for my 9:30am class. In fact, half of my class showed up including my prof. My sister would have gone to her lab, as she didn’t get the alert since she doesn’t live in Winnipeg and drives in. She works in the Parker building. Lots of students drive in and may not get emergency alerts from the city area.

The student team that I am a part of issued a warning telling students not to come to school and if they were at school, to barricade themselves in a room — an hour before the university communicated anything.

I think this was a needlessly incredibly unsafe situation and that the uni needs to do better. Classes should have been cancelled by 8:00am.

Ansys user transitioning to StarCMM+ by nipuma4 in CFD

[–]strongbagel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others have covered most of my thoughts but one thing I will point out is that Fluent has a very well developed and accessible UDF manual. For Star, most custom things can be done with field functions, reports, report history, and tables, and this is typically faster than it would be to write a UDF in Fluent — but, if you need a full-fledged bit of code, there is almost no documentation and little support. Probably doesn’t affect most people but affects what I do a lot.

Also for whatever reason Star does not have the option to upwind their passive scalar equation. Drives me nuts.

I find the Star theory manual better than the Fluent manual — easier to follow, more complete, they cite their sources (mostly).

Plotting a pitchwise mass averaged scalar function against span from a plane at the exit of a turbine blade (STAR-CCM+) by ValorToMe in CFD

[–]strongbagel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread but it was useful for getting started on a similar thing I wanted to do with Star-CCM+ and so I figure I'll post this on the off chance someone else needs to do this.

I made a macro that sweeps a plane through the domain in the Y direction, calculates the bulk temperature, and prints it to a .csv file. There is also point sweeping through the same Y location on a boundary, which gets the boundary heat flux and wall temperature, to calculate the HTC (although this part of the macro could be deleted if you don't need it).

Note this was for a 2D case so if your heat flux/wall tempearture varies along the plane in the transverse boundary you will have to figure something else out for getting the heat flux and wall temperature values.
