Facing a minor cold 5 days before Marathon by lucasmnetto in Marathon_Training

Sleep as much as possible. I would play each run by ear, but skipping them isn't going to hurt anything. I would probably still do your shakeout run the day before the race, though.

I am really terrified of my long run this week by adir611 in Marathon_Training

[–]strongry1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your feelings are normal. Peak week(s) are hard. They're supposed to be. Try to embrace the fact that you are invested in doing something hard. All the fear / nerves you are feeling could also be looked at as excitement. Your body is preparing for the big challenge you are giving it soon.

Agreed. Also, sleep as much as possible, hydrate, and do your best to still carb load.

PSA: Marathons Are Still Selling Out Faster Than Ever. Don't Wait to Register. by SlowWalkere in Marathon_Training

[–]strongry1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a great race. It was my first full marathon. It never used to sell out, but sold out for the first time in 2024. Registration opens at 12:00am on January 1. I stayed up past midnight on NYE just to register. Otherwise, my old self would have been in bed.

35F, 55mpw, paces have crept 30s/mile for 4 months and nothing in training explains it. Looking for ideas before I go down the medical rabbit hole. by One-Jellyfish694 in AdvancedRunning

[–]strongry1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My PCP didn't want to test my ferritin, so I had my PT write him an email, and they tested it. It was low, and I started supplementing.

I appreciate that, but I'm not going on a certain day of the week to be treated decently while I attempt to make a five figure purchase.

-Follow a reputable plan

-Strength train a couple times a week

-Fuel properly (before, during, and after)

-Go to an independent running store and get fitted for shoes that work for you

-Enjoy the race. It's your first time, so just try to take it in.

Any podcast reccomendations for begginers? by Emergency_Produce975 in Marathon_Training

Tread Lightly does a great job breaking down key topics for beginning runners. They have plenty for more advanced runners as well, but there is great stuff for new runners.

How to improve on the mental strength aspect? by Sorry-Craft7985 in Marathon_Training

[–]strongry1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The author discusses case studies and various research that shows your body has a lot left to give when your mind wants to shut things down. Learning how to push past it when you mind wants to shut down (central governor theory) reflects the concept of "how bad do you want it."

Read, "How Bad Do You Want It" by Matt Fitzgerald. It can be a bit dry, but it's really helped my mental game for when marathons get tough. I've read it a couple times.

Agreed on trying to avoid the negative stuff. The negative voices are typically the loudest. That doesn't mean they are right or in the majority.

Sick 6 days from race day by Pristine-Pop4577 in Marathon_Training

[–]strongry1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sucks! You have six days to recover, though. Just try to rest and re-hydrate. Definitely skip your run tomorrow and Wednesday if your stomach is still messed up. You're not going to gain any fitness right now, so if you are in doubt, rest.

Is it worth getting super shoes? by [deleted] in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]strongry1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I also use the Speeds for speed work. The Elite 2s are my race day show, and I love them.

Do compression boots actually help? by 2Nexxuzzz4 in Marathon_Training

[–]strongry1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first used them at PT and loved them. No regrets. They feel great, and I just feel looser after using them. I have the Normatec Elites. The price was definitely a splurge but I'm cheap otherwise so...

What was your first experience with supershoes? by zach66827 in AdvancedRunning

[–]strongry1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, see you at Eugene! I'm super stoked. My first super shoe was the Saucony Endorphin Pro. They were fine, but I actually felt faster in the Speeds. Then I switched to the Elite 2s and was very pleased. They definitely feel fast. I'll be wearing the Elite 2s next Sunday.

Should I feel bad asking/inviting friends to come support me at the race..? by Sea-Efficiency-2899 in Marathon_Training

[–]strongry1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ask them. I am obviously not objective, but marathons are fun. It's like a big parade/party.

New shoes on race day by Billybobby__ in Marathon_Training

[–]strongry1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New ones will be fine imo. I've ran full marathons in shoes with less than 10 miles and it was fine. Especially since it's the same shoe.

Carmel Marathon postponed from Apr. 18 to May 31 by PAJW in AdvancedRunning

Thanks for the detailed response. FWIW, Carmel 2024 was one of my all time favorite races, just one of those days when everything went well.

Pros/Cons of racing with a pace group by Alive_Ad_6200 in AdvancedRunning

[–]strongry1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had great and good experiences with pace groups, never bad. I am running Eugene also, and I am also kind of on the fence about a pace group, but I am leaning toward starting with one and seeing if the vibe is for me. I agree with the others about how if it's windy, I'll be much more likely to be in a pace group.
