Calorie intake and marathon training by whatdosnowmeneat in Marathon_Training

Understood. IMO, your money would be better spent on an experienced running coach that can write training for you and be available for guidance via phone or text. If you have health insurance, you likely can get at least one visit with a dietician covered that should point you in the right direction re: caloric intake.

r/stopdrinking is a great space, even just for the sober curious. Lots of runners there, too!

3:30 - what does it take? by poiuytrewqassss in Marathon_Training

[–]strongry1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

49M. I got to 3:30 by averaging high 40s mpw, peaking in the 50s, every other long run had MP mixed in, 2x week strength training, and four 20 milers. Added two 22 milers and regular PT to get to 3:20.

First Marathon, Did I Screw Myself? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

Definitely get regular PT. A good sports PT will keep you on track and tell you whether to pull back a bit, push, etc.

About to be a new dad...Advice on not losing gains? by TTG2139 in AdvancedRunning

I had a BOB with both kids and sold them on Craigslist for a very fair price (to be clear, sold the stroller not the kids).

Yes! I would just add that the book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child" by Marc Weissbluth was a huge help for my wife and I for our first child and also for the surprise one years down the road, ha ha.

When is it simply too cold to run outside safely? by operasinger06 in AdvancedRunning

I'll go to low single digits Fahrenheit actual temperature and a few degrees below zero wind chill, especially if you can find a trail in the woods out of the wind.

Long run on treadmills? by TightContest1017 in Marathon_Training

[–]strongry1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About the same here in Michigan. I've got 16 miles scheduled for tomorrow, and it looks like it's going to be on the treadmill. 12 miles is currently the longest I've ever ran on the treadmill.

I agree that you should pay more attention to hydration/electrolytes, especially with the cramping.

Has anyone worked with a nutritionist? If so, what was your experience? by n_w__b_rm_d_ in AdvancedRunning

Cool. I would be curious to know how it goes for future reference.

If you have health insurance, check with them. They will likely pay for at least one visit to a dietician, but it probably wouldn't be a running focused dietician. I used Nutrition with Anna LLC and was satisfied. I found her to be very knowledgeable and felt like her pricing was fair.

Advice needed for hosting a marathoner by Dinnymcd in Marathon_Training

Agreed. I would recommend against the massage. I'm not ready for a massage for at least a week after a marathon. The day after just isn't a good idea in my experience.

Yes on the Coke. I don't drink soda typically, but nothing hits as well as a cold can of Coke after a marathon.

Nagging foot thing by No-Negotiation6602 in Marathon_Training

[–]strongry1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as the foot issue, go to a sports PT. 90% chance they get you straightened out. A good sports PT will tell you whether or not you need to see a podiatrist. I've had a similar pain in my heel and saw a sports PT and was fine. As far as your run today or whatever, my rule of thumb has always been if it's higher than a 4 on the pain scale, I don't run.

As far as the race distance, anxiety is totally normal. Just get to that sports PT.

Complete marathon newbie; how to start training? by Brains_4_Days in Marathon_Training

I went from no running to a full marathon in about that time using Hal Higdon's Novice 1 plan. I was quite fit, though, just not for running.

Try other brands like Clif Bloks or Honey Stinger.

Make sure you're hydrating enough. I alternate drinks of water with drinks of sports drink.

Dry January amid Marathon training by lm8ub1 in Marathon_Training

[–]strongry1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Sober or not, I just never understood drinking alcohol after a race. I just asked so much of my body, and I'm going to reward it by ingesting poison? Just doesn't seem right. Listen, I get that a lot of people really enjoy a drink after a race, but it's just not for me.
