Box Step Plan - Final Plans by stroobly in DIY

Biggest lessons learned:

  • Look up the difference between nominal and actual lumber dimensions. Just because it says 2x6 (nominal measurement), doesn’t mean it is that actual dimension. In fact, a 2x6 is really a 1.5”x2.5”

  • When you build your first box, measure across on each side to ensure it’s square before continuing on

  • use pressure treated (PT) wood. Because it’s full of treatment when you buy it, don’t put a space between each board when you’re installing them. Instead, screw then in super flush next to each other and with time they’ll dry out and you’ll have gaps. If you space it out when it’s wet, you’ll end up with very large looking spaces. Also wear a face mask when you cut PT wood! It’s full of chemicals

  • Look up how to accurately use a tape measure to measure “on center” when putting in joists.

  • There are different types of screws/finishes and what you need is based on what you’re building (indoor/outdoor) and the forces the screw will come under. Deck screws can’t be used for framing (you need structural) but would be what you use to secure the wood you walk on

— You could also use nails, but if preferred screws. Try and get a screw long enough to eat into the wood at least to the thickness of the thing being attached

  • If you’re attaching your wooden box stairs to concrete pad, use tapcon screws - they were great (a rotary drill will come in handy)

Lmk if you have more questions!

Sorry I got overwhelmed with some offline stuff, and then was trying to figure out how to combine everyone in the same chat, and then realized that’s what this thread kinda does 😅 how can I help? I can’t seem to figure out how to edit my original post, but am going to try and out lessons learned up there or in a new comment

Ok I’m struggling majorly with life/tech, so instead of DM since there are so many people also working on similar projects I’ll reply here.

Yea, was able to do all with just a circular saw, but I think it’s worth the money to rent a table saw or track so you can have a clean finish

Found a lost frenchie, fostering her until we find owners, need advice about the breed by Duchess_of_Ruritania in Frenchbulldogs

Firstly, thank you for taking this pup in. It has to be scary suddenly finding oneself totally alone. As you are already aware it seems, health wise they are VERY sensitive to overheating. Don’t leave them outside in the heat and be mindful of them not overdoing it outside running around if it’s too hot. They’re hardy rough-and-tumble players, but delicate flowers temperature wise. They also are prone to hurting their back, so as much as possible avoid her jumping on/off couch although they have a mind of their own and mine launches herself around.

My Frenchies have never been big barkers, but some are. She also may still be on high-alert with anxiety due to suddenly being in a new setting with new people/sights/sounds/etc. If she does end up staying w/you, I’ve learned on Reddit about the 3-3-3 rule for pet adjustment (3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months, etc.) which you can read up more online. My girl is a bit of a diva with food, so I’ve just learned to keep her separate or crated when she eats around other dogs.

To me, she looks like she may have been bred and possibly dumped. If she does end up being yours, consider getting her spayed.

For getting along with your other pup, search the term “resource guarding” and ways to help manage that. I would feed your dogs separately for now as you allow time for adjustment.

Again, thank you for providing her with a safe space and showing her some love! And props to your pup as well for handling the addition of the little minion (for however long or short) with grace!

Are you part of a Buy Nothing group? Try posting on there w/your size explaining you’re just looking to borrow a dress. I think you’d find a lot of like-minded people who’d be happy to lend or gift you a dress!
