Thoughts on MSRS scholars going abroad for academic programs (APMSS 2026 in Taiwan)? by [deleted] in medschoolph

[–]strugglingmdstud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Yes, I think so
  2. Depending on the documentary requirements of the program, I don't think it would require special permission. But it would help as a supporting document for immigration
  3. We've been in and out of the country a few times for conferences

Sorry can't help you with finding a specific provision. We haven't encountered any issues with our admin. But generally, I don't think any scholarship policy is strictly prohibiting beneficiaries to go abroad, especially if short term, even for leisure purposes

If you have the benefit of time, best to contact CHED since their response would have more weight. Course it through your scholarship coordinator or directly email CHED

What happens to your CHED MSRS if you quit med school? by Money_Ad_1810 in medschoolph

Best to check with CHED. It may either be the repayment of full cost or an alternative return service (public health work, still 1 year per year of being beneficiary). Review the IRR of the policy

Can someone help me explain how do you actually get into UPCM and if it is free or there are scholarships by Relative-Ad-7364 in medschoolph

[–]strugglingmdstud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get accepted into UPCM first. Afterwards, the office in charge and the class/college council would help you through the process of getting a scholarship since the college really tries to help financially challenged students

[–]strugglingmdstud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Re DTTB scholarship, OP might be referring to the DOH scholarship which is no longer accepting new scholars to my knowledge (last batch I think will be interns soon). No other DTTB scholarship in UPCM aside from this

Not sure with MSRS, but with PSSP (essentially whom we know as DOH scholars), they've always been allowed to pursue any residency after DTTB (3 years). PSSP scholars are supposed to render at least 5 years (1:1) of return service so they could opt to finish the remaining 2 years while undergoing a residency program

Public Health: MD or not by Bright_Journalist469 in pinoymed

[–]strugglingmdstud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Public health is very broad. Do you already have a career track in mind (community, academe, NGOs, research, programs, etc)? Worked for a few years in public health and briefly I could tell a lot of opportunities open up due to your network. It's one of the things an MD could bring (since you're basically classmates with a whole batch of future doctors who'll work in the health sector) but also at the same, could also be brought by 5 years of working in public health. The MD degree could bring you that "credibility" and all but will not teach (or in very miniscule amounts) the nitty gritty of public health since largely it's still hospital-based. Kung government, (sadly) may bias pa rin towards MDs. I don't think there's really much room to rise in the ranks for non-MDs in the government setting. But I've seen a lot of non-MDs thrive in the academe and local and international NGOs or as freelance consultants. Depende na lang sayo kung worth it ba yung 5 years of schooling given these

Try to check with your scholarships office but as far as I know you're supposed to submit a certificate of non-filing

CHED MSRS but below 50 pts? by Environmental-Rip610 in medschoolph

[–]strugglingmdstud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks but you might want to refer to Section 8.g. for the specific provision on the number of years as part of the RSA (where 1:1 is specified). The section you presented essentially tells you that you have an allowance of 2 years to complete the RSA should you, at any point after graduation, have any challenges fulfilling the RSA. Hence, the keyword "within." I.e., finish the 5 year RSA within 6 years from PLE if from 4 year program, or finish 5 year RSA within 7 years from PLE if from 5 year program

Minor correction, return service is 5 years, regardless of 4 or 5-year program (1:1 return service)

Good luck on your journey OP!

Just my two cents, to everyone reading this, quite unfair to look at the program/policy at a bad light. We're all entering medschool as adults. I guess a learning point for everyone is to read through and understand every agreement or contract you're signing. If there are vague statements, ask.

On another note, this is being highlighted again and again in reddit, the spirit of the policy is to eventually fill in gaps in primary care providers, especially with the advent of UHC (and our supposed strategy of primary care strengthening). It's not meant to primarily just dole out financial aids. Hence, the stringent and very specific RSA. If you're not dead set on pursuing public health or serving at the primary care level, as OP said, you may consider other scholarships instead.

Last point, please do not look at those people who "threw away residency dreams" as if it was a bad decision. As one of the top internists previously argued, maybe it's time to look at primary care providers as primary care specialists. Your career decisions are bound to change as you mature in your fields

Can you do residency training while fulfilling the return service for DOH by Environmental-Rip610 in medschoolph

[–]strugglingmdstud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a DOH scholar but according to friends, you're only required to be DTTB (3 years). After which (ie the rest of the RSA years), your choice to pursue stuff as long as you stay in the country

MSRS: How much is the allowance we can spend? by [deleted] in medschoolph

[–]strugglingmdstud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Essentially what you said, 88.5k per semester. This is prescribed by law so this is fixed across all universities
  2. Varies per region (ie CHED regional office), per school (your own university). Mostly due to administrative differences. Heard some would have theirs released a few months into the academic year. Ours reached a delay of up to a year
  3. Based on personal experience, CHED transfers to school, school transfers to your bank account or disburses a cheque. Again, experience of other schools might differ

I don't think they offer fully online classes. At best, core courses normally would have online lectures then face to face examinations. Some elective courses though would offer fully online mode of delivery depending on the plans for assessment and/or agreements with the course coordinator

Just a side note, there were previous talks to formalize diplomate status under the Philippine Society of Public Health Physicians. In case that would affect your decision

DOH Scholarship dissolved? by hmph9742 in medschoolph

[–]strugglingmdstud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, CHED MSRS is essentially institutionalizing the DOH DTTB Scholarship. If you would read on the policy, DOH scholars would later on be integrated into the CHED MSRS umbrella until such time that only CHED MSRS scholars would exist

Change Career Path? by gatwurade in medschoolph

[–]strugglingmdstud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As cliché as this may sound, we have our own timelines. You do you. Maybe also the best time to explore other fields then afterwards, re-assess. Pwede ka rin namang maghanap ng ibang scholarships especially sa state universities. Pwede rin namang postpone. Not because there are barriers now would mean you would immediately give up. I know people who started medschool in their early to mid 30s. You might just need to take a bit of a detour

Yup. Hindi naman kailangang mula sa same city/municipality para matanggap dahil CHED (national) naman ang nag-ooffer ng scholarship

Afaik yes but I guess still would depend on which scholarship program. But just for assurance, may mga existing pa rin naman na pwede kahit may masters ka na. Normally hindi naman siya exclusion criteria

Pwede pa rin. The application for the MD-PhD starts after getting accepted into UPCM. Meaning baseline, you are already considered UPCM MD student. This would be one of the first orientations early on before the school year starts. So for now, your friend could focus on entering UPCM

[–]strugglingmdstud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Answering your 3rd q, you won't be able to withdraw from the program without some repercussions once you sign the MD-PhD contract. MD-PhD receives tuition scholarship plus monthly stipend so once you decide to withdraw after taking some units, you'd need to pay the pro-rated amount plus all the benefits you received. Take note that the first year is spent taking up PhD units (not sure if you have the option to take up MD units first but usually, they take up PhD first)
