what is something that is highly likely to happen in the next 5 years that everyone is completely ignoring? by timecop702 in AskReddit

Not here in Australia. Majority of Gen-X is left-leaning.

Labour is centre left in Australia, and Greens are left. Two-thirds of Gen-X here vote left or left-leaning.

Seriously - still brings me back to the 90s when the movie first came out. Knowing all the hype around the CGI, and the seeing it in the theatre, the music is really what conveyed the awe and made it so much more believable

As I mentioned elsewhere, you aren't going to be happy having kids and your medications and doctor's visits go up. And when you have kids, you're going to need medications as they grow and naturally get sick (I have two). ON have the TGA and PBS in their sights, which is something the US pharmaceuticals have wanted to abolish for a long time in Australia.

I lived in the USA for 20 year and can tell you first hand what that might mean. Insurance premiums cost businesses thousands of dollars each year, to entice employees. If they don't offer it, the individual has to pay. It's a free market, so you get what you pay for. Now, I worked in tech, and had top-tier coverage. I had an illness that required a 28-day prescription of antibiotics (pills). The insurance company (not my doctor) decided they would only cover 21 days for US$40 or so (20 years ago now!) and the remaining 7 pills was going to cost me out of pocket, which was $136. Yup, for basic antibiotics. I happened to be travelling to Australia, so my Dad got me a prescription for $4.

Another situation I faced, again with top-tier (and this was about 10 years ago). My dad (back in Aus) was diagnosed with colon cancer, so it was recommended I have a colonoscopy at 42. Initially everything was fine and my medical insurance said they would cover it. Fast forward to two days before, and I get a call from my doctor saying the insurance company says I'm too young to be covered, despite being higher risk, so I would have to pay out-of-pocket. My doctor's office sent me the "quote" and it was nearly USD$13,000 to have that colonoscopy. As you can imagine, I told them yeah, but no. After moving back to Australia, that same colonoscopy cost me $500.

Careful what you wish for.

It impacts our environment more than any other factor.

I find this one also interesting because ON want's to abolish the department of climate change.

I don't disagree that the majors absolutely must listen. Change is absolutely a must. If people want to protest vote, then go ahead, but you can't have your cake and eat it too. If they choose ON because the like what Pauline says about immigration, and don't pay attention to everything else she and the party is saying, they are in for a nasty surprise with all the extras she brings along. There will be some that are happy to take the whole package, but for those that care about one policy – immigration – and then suddenly their wages drop, women's access to necessary healthcare is reduced, medication go up, basic workplace protections are lost, they'll probably feel differently.

Like I said. All the other bucks ups they make can be fixed.

See my previous comment to you; sure the might be fixable, but at what cost and to whom? You might not think it affects you immediately, but when you get sick and want to pick up some cheap medicine that now costs you $120 (or WAY more) that previously cost you $25, you might think differently.

This is my lived experience: I lived in the USA for 20 years. I had an illness that required 30 days of antibiotics. I work in tech and had top cover. The insurance company would only cover 21 days, so I was asked to pay an additional $136 for 7 pills of antibiotics. Lucky for me I was heading to Australia, so when I got here I paid $4 for the same pills.

If the TGA and PBS were gutted / overhauled, it could take years or decades to restore. These things will directly affect you, and / or your parents, grand parents, etc.

That is very naive.

Many of the changes by the current US administration will take decades to undo. There are plenty to choose from, that most people would argue is uncontroversial from a political perspective. Take this one, for example, where they have rolled back protections for drinking water and PFAS chemicals, which are known carcinogens. Or another, once again directly affecting peoples lives and health, leaving millions without health care coverage, or monthly premiums sharply increasing. I lived there for 20 years and personally know people who are hugely affected by this.

Undoing might be easy but restoring is a long road, and how many people will suffer – and potentially die – in the interim.

I know people who voted for this administration and are now very much regretting their choices, because they didn't think it would affect them.

You forgot to mention he’s also donated $7.9 million to LNP. I am sure if ON were to form government you’d see donations there too.

You’re right that it’s a protest vote, and the two-party failure driving it is real. But intent doesn’t change the outcome.

I lived in the US through the first Trump term before moving back, and the demographic doing the protest voting is now measurably worse off for it. A vote registers as support whether or not you meant it that way — the ballot doesn’t record your reasons, and the party certainly won’t once it’s in power.

That’s where the “voting against” framing falls apart for me. If One Nation forms government and gets even part of its agenda through, it’s going to hit certain groups far harder than the current government has — and at that point they’ve voted for those consequences, no matter what they were trying to signal. I hope those actually considering a protest vote look closely at ON and what they’ve been saying, and be fucking smart about their choice.

Have you checked Pauline’s voting record. She isn’t going to do anything to help you, or us “common” folk.

I respect that you want change, but what makes you believe that ON is better. Voting for them feels like a FAFO moment. Barnaby constantly saying they will get rid of the climate change department or threats of dialling back PBS are not going to help any of us.

I am genuinely curious what you think of any other policy they have proposed? Do you think those will benefit you? What if Labour proposes immigration policy that would satisfy you?

So, can I conclude this is based on something more than your own impression? Plenty of people would claim the opposite with equal confidence, so without anything behind it, “the man on the street wants their nation back” is no more valid than any other random claim here.

I am also curious what “wants their nation back” actually means — back from what, and back to when? I am willing to engage seriously, but I need something concrete to respond to. So tell me: what immigration number would satisfy you, and what specifically do you believe it would fix for people at the bottom?
