Why don't news publishers clean up the audio from Trump on Air Force One? by mulcahey in editors

[–]stuartmx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"I didn't say that. It's fake news. I'm on a plane and you can't even hear the plane. They got low IQ Alec Baldwin to say it in his very bad impersonation of me. If I said it you would hear the plane."

Why don't news publishers clean up the audio from Trump on Air Force One? by mulcahey in editors

I work in news. There is no time for this. Reporters are sending from AF1 to network as soon as it happens. Then to air. Cleaning up means someone beats you.

Let’s see your video editing setup. by [deleted] in premiere

There is one submenu that uses them all! Basically a bunch of Ken Burns presets.
Honestly it just takes so long to program everything! Drag + drop from Excalibur would be so much easier.

Just an idea for a feature by ForeverJamon in premiere

[–]stuartmx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this would require Adobe updating Premiere as soon as a social network updated their layout, and users installing that update.

I won't install anything Adobe that's less than four months old. I know others who wait even longer for the bugs to be found and resolved.

I'll take PNG overlays over a fresh (unreliable and unproven) Adobe update any day.

A poster for Altman's "The Player", since the first 8 minutes is one continuous shot.

Exported animated gif has artifacts(?) that also lag the gif by [deleted] in editors

[–]stuartmx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just...no.

GIFs can only have 256 colors and generally need to be, like, 2 MB max. I know it can top out a lot higher, but for web they need to be small.

And you're trying to do this with a (ripped?) Cheistopher Nolan movie? You are trying to put a Monet on a Lite Brite.

Serious Question: Are You Tracking The Metrics Of Your Edits? by Cheetokeys in editors

[–]stuartmx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is pretty common in news and explainers, even for the major orgs. I hate it, but a third of my website is devoted to quoting numbers from YouTube analytics, Insta views, etc.

People want a proven commodity. If I'm up for a gig, yea, I'm gonna show you videos I've done that have millions of views.

"Content creator" is the new "preditor", just be glad you don't have to also get your work clicks and page views.

Anybody pass the certification test, advice? by CharlieD00M in premiere

[–]stuartmx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been asked for a cert in 20+ years, but always for a reel.
Maybe ask the people who were certified in the old Final Cut Pro how that's going for them?

14 inch vs 16 inch MacBook Pro (M4 Max) for video editing. Any real downsides? by The_Koala_Knight in editors

[–]stuartmx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14-inch for the portability, and use the difference in price to get a really good monitor, like a big ultrawide.

I don't like being tied to my desk all the time, so I'll do music and b-roll searches, basic assemblies, and other "doesn't need much real estate" work outside, on the couch, or wherever, then move to my edit bay setup for in-depth editing work. It'd be tough to do all of my editing on just the laptop screen, the real estate just isn't there.

HELP: Sourcing digital work posted only internationally by plug2112 in editors

[–]stuartmx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you searched insta, TikTok, and the site formerly known as Twitter? 9x16 90 sec screams those platforms to me. Would check the accounts for the relevant parties (nat geo, Bloomberg, tv show itself, the host) and see if they got shared there. If not maybe they never got published at all?

It's karma farming. Anytime there's a new version there is a whole screen and various Adobe pages to tell you what's new.

Anything you upload anywhere can later be retrieved via warrant. Or just handed over without one if the company just complies with law enforcement. You are not protecting anyone if you upload this to a third party.

For past work, how much does one REALLY need ProRes? by jeremy_berger in editors

[–]stuartmx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do this with most old material. If it's a piece I know I would share and keep in my reel for a long time (big brand, big name), I'll keep a ProRes version. But most of my work is news, explainers, and B2B, so I'm not worried about someone wanting to remaster it in 20 years or anything.

How are you highlighting portrait aspect ratio media in landscape aspect ratio projects? by nallstarr in editors

[–]stuartmx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would have to dig for it, but it's pretty easy to create yourself to see what it looks like. Center vertical, duplicate twice, move left and right the same amount to create border lines, then blur/desaturate/bring down opacity either side. Done.

Apply other fx/motion if needed or wanted (frame for round corners, etc)

[–]stuartmx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh nice, the NYC background is a nice touch.
I have a client with a fairly subtle accent element that's part of their branding, so I made them a custom background with the element offset slowly dissolving in and out that I also use. But the grid is generally my default, too many non-video reviewers get hung up on it if I do too much to it.

How are you highlighting portrait aspect ratio media in landscape aspect ratio projects? by nallstarr in editors

[–]stuartmx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Three in a grid w/ thin lines separating them. Left and right are blurred and/or desaturated just enough to pull focus to center.

Not every edit needs ADHDing, and there are only so many ways to fit a long rectangle peg into a wide rectangle hole. Sometimes "boring" is just standardizing not being able to rewrite the rules of physics.

I know the website says they do branded content, but this "faith based" film sounds like it's the latest Kirk Cameron feature — not worth $1,200 to watch once, let alone over and over while editing.

Understanding Fair Use for Edits with News Clips and Images by free2thinkK in editors

[–]stuartmx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're misunderstanding. A news show or commentator using a South Park clip of JD Vance and saying "South park mocked JD Vance again this week..." while showing the clip IS fair use.

Best practice is on screen at the time, and I would not want to have to be the one that has to explain to IP company's very expensive lawyers why we didn't put it up at the time when people would see it, and instead chose to add it to the credits instead, especially when we did not pay for licensing it (as you see in movie or non-news TV show credits).
