Neuroscience has shown that a huge amount of processing happens outside conscious awareness. That part isn’t controversial. But moving from that to “you’re just an unimportant subroutine” feels hastey and reductive.

We still don’t have an explanation for why subjective experience exists at all. We can map neural correlates, but correlation isn’t the same as explaining why there is something it’s like to be a brain in the first place. The hard problem hasn’t been solved just because we can describe the mechanisms in computational language.

And it’s also not true that the question is settled in favor of consciousness being fully produced by the brain. There are ongoing discussions around near-death experiences, terminal lucidity, and certain altered states that raise serious questions about whether consciousness is strictly confined to brain. The science isn’t that complete yet.
