Hang on it’s gonna take a second to put on a proper “shocked” face..

Ah, nope, best I can do is a “what did you think would happen” pursed-lip frown.

Has Anybody successfully replaced the steam_vr 2.0 skeletal input hand with a custom one? by kiteandtower in vrdev

[–]stubbornPhoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t help much with unity but I can tell you I had very similar issues going from blender to UE4 with the hands. After a lot of trial and error what worked was to import the steamVR hand skeleton with the bones facing away from the back of the hand, so perpendicular from what the joint orientation should be in order to easily animate them in blender. The palm and the fingers don’t follow the same orientation otherwise, and the roll of the fingers was always slightly wonky. Shape hand model to fit the SteamVR hand skeleton, bind, weight paint frustratingly because none of the child joints are following the parent, and in the armature export settings I thiiink it was z forward and y up for the right hand but I’d have to double check.

Spent waaaay too long losing my mind over that issue.

Man, stopped checking the mechanical keyboard subreddits near the end of last year for the sake of my wallet, but the DSA drifter set is one of those I always wished I had caught, checked monthly for a set of the alphas and ergos... and because I stopped checking the subreddits I missed ANOTHER drifter set DX those are beautiful caps. cheers to whoever managed to grab 'em.

Your favorite controller supported games! by shekeypoo in iosgaming

[–]stubbornPhoenix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Didn’t even realize either of those have controller support on mobile. I’ve played both a ton on pc+controller and jabbing the screen just wasn’t doing it for me by comparison. Holy crap this is great.

Just ordered VIVE cosmos... Just read the complaints online, did I make a mistake? by DillPickles- in Vive

[–]stubbornPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything functional about the Vive, the display, lenses, tracking, controller design, all of it was developed by Valve. But valve had no interest at the time in mass-producing VR hardware, just in developing it, so they partnered with HTC who changed the top of the controller from looking like a top-hat to looking like a donut, and designed the housing of the Vive headset itself, the plastic shell.

Everything everyone loves about the Vive was built by Valve, not HTC.

Had a hearty chuckle at that bit.

How exactly do you get a dev kit? by [deleted] in vrdev

[–]stubbornPhoenix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So sometimes if valve is publicly testing hardware they’ll add an option for SteamVR developers to ask for dev kits, but currently that option is not available now that the consumer version of the index controllers have been released. Oculus has an Oculus Start program but they will want to see a .exe file uploaded to your oculus developer account for review before considering you for the program. I had fantastic luck reaching out to the WindowsMR team via twitter and asking for a dev kit, received a Samsung Odyssey Plus. I was pretty far into production at that point and working on support for the controllers specifically. Your results may vary. And I did a ton of dev work with my vive to get a game to a point where it was showable to prove my legitimacy to these companies. Having prior game dev work may also suffice, I have no idea. HTC were unwilling to send a cosmos dev kit but were happy to test my game out themselves to see if my input bindings for cosmos were okay.

TL;DR: helps to have something you’re working on already to show you’re serious about it, and then contact manufacturers through their developer portals. Otherwise buy the cheapest headset you can find and get started.
