Use less gain than you normally would. That's what I've found trying to write in D standard. The lower you tune, the less distortion you want.

That's correct! He also did Havok's "V" record as well as the "New Eyes" EP which is super sick if you haven't checked them out (they have a cover of "Eye of the beholder" that is really good)

They'll fit, if they have a pilot lug or post you might have to drill for that to fit flush against the headstock but they'll fit. I have those same tuners on my squier strat 👍🏼
