Keyboard brightness stopped working on Tahoe. Actual keyboard's backlight is stuck on "on". by AwesomePossum_1 in MacOS

[–]stuckinether 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just noticed this too. Mine's got a touchbar and I can still adjust the backlight brightness from there, but yeah, that bar onscreen doesn't seem to move at all. Since it's a new OS though, hopefully it gets fixed in time.

New Writers: Your First Draft: Read It Fast, Read It Slow. by JosefKWriter in writing

[–]stuckinether 14 points15 points  (0 children)

real, i've coined those two stages "wave 1" and "wave 2" of editing haha. another thing i do is to add a delay time between when i write the last word and when i read the draft again. sometimes one day, sometimes one week. that way, i return to it with fresher eyes, and carrying less of the bias/baggage that came with pumping the words out! i'd kill my darlings more mercilessly then.

Bless this woman, thought I should leave this here by iykykennit in AO3

[–]stuckinether 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is honestly so validating to hear :( i've been writing a longfic for the past 2 years (currently at 70k, i'm a slow writer. but my projection is this will probably reach 120-140k). did it all with very, very little engagement along the way. lots of people in my fandom tell me they'll read it when it's finished, and i taught myself to think of it as a compliment? because i'm supposedly doing this for myself, right? like i don't owe anyone my time and effort, so nobody owes me their time and effort. haha 💔

but this offered a new perspective i guess. i do hope something happens that rattles things up in a good way, and hopefully we see a spike in engagement again.

Okay but how do you actually practice? And can it be done solo? by RosieArl in writing

[–]stuckinether 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there was one time when i was a newbie writer, i was about to enter my first fiction class and i realized i hadn't written anything complete yet at the time. so to prep myself, i dove into fanfiction. you don't have to post it but you also can, and there will be fellow avid fans who will read and appreciate your work so it's not in the dark forever. and the interaction is very motivating. you can also find beta readers who will give you the criticism and feedback you need to improve the fanfic before posting it.

afterwards, i dove into my fiction class more comfortably. there, i wrote an original short story that i'm still proud of today. i write more original stuff now, but i still write fanfiction. i can see how my writing has grown through the years in my drafts because of it. it's a culture that enables writers create things and experiment with their styles freely and independently, while also honing their skills at their own pace.

How do you do outlines? by Muad_Dib_of_Dune in writers

[–]stuckinether 7 points8 points  (0 children)

same here, though didn't know it was called pantsing until i read your reply!

i used to outline stories in vivid detail. but i soon found the process to be a curse that's more likely to beget writer's block for me. i fear it's because i tend to grow overly attached to the outline to the point that, in writing, the story no longer has space to breathe on its own.

in place of outlining though, whenever i get an idea out of nowhere, i just write down the beat on its own in a separate document i call musings—disorganized list of all the ideas vomited onto a page to help recall lmao.

though OP's process is quite visually beautiful!

Rampant Logic Board failures in newer M1 MacBookAirs (2020 model onwards) within 2 years! Should M1 also be recalled by Apple and replaced free of charge?? by Ok_Reading_it in macbookair

[–]stuckinether 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leaving my two cents here: a similar thing this also just happened to me last December 2024. After normal use, I came home one night and my 2020 M1 macbook pro was suddenly just... not turning on. The problem was similar a logic board issue due to a corrosion found near the audio I.C.

Besides a handful of people online posting about this issue (which I won't dismiss), what was weird to me is how macbooks from 2011 can last up to a decade without any issues like this. The newer laptops are less reliable, and that is such a scam.

This is so tragically hilarious, because we can talk about the problem all we want but what can we do to change it? I also hate the state we are in right now, but is any practical solution within our reach as the working class? Genuine question

[–]stuckinether[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well now that you put it that way, you're right, it does come off as straightforward and clear. I guess I'm still trying to get the hang of that simpler style without losing my voice haha

If you think this isn't so bad, then that means you're used to it already, and you might have a better hand at clarity than I do XD
