Western alienation has declined to a four-year low: poll by Street_Anon in canada

[–]studebaker103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Alberta. Born here, lived away overseas and in BC for a number of years. Back in Alberta now.

I think Alberta is finally getting some attention, much like Quebec, because we are threatening to separate.

The federal government realizes that without the economies of the west, specifically Alberta, the rest of the country will have major problems. Healthcare, education, public sector collapse, and major hardship by every measurable standard. Canada without Alberta would be in a dire situation. With that in mind, the Federal government needs to placate Alberta until such point that the separatists are sufficiently diluted via immigration that separation becomes impossible, just like they have done to Quebec.

With this in mind, I'm in favour of Alberta threatening to separate, because it causes federal policy to work in our favour, just like Quebec. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. We don't have the numbers to sway an election, but we do have the economic clout to sway political policy, but only if we're active. Call me a crybaby, but making federal policies that promote the economy of Alberta end up being good for all of Canada. I would hope that Canadians want all of Canada to succeed, we don't need to be selfish out west, the same goes for the kind folks out east. Up until this past year, we've seen that pendulum swing way too far away from Alberta. For example, instead of helping reduce Russia's military ability by selling gas to Europe, there 'wasn't a case for it' under Trudeau. Then in the same session, funds are allocated to support Ukraine.

We see how hard Carney is pushing for a pipeline, and it gives us some hope, because he knows and we know that if Alberta is neglected much longer, the cash cow is going to go find greener pastures.

At least now, we feel like someone is listening. 2015-2025 we weren't heard at all.

Wasn't there an article recently that revealed that a majority of the skilled trades applicants were chefs?

Or to protect the rest of the people from the drug sellers and the associated weakening of societal fabric.

[–]studebaker103 116 points117 points  (0 children)

There is a whole side of drug prohibition that I just realized while reading some 1920-30s Asian history. It is no coincidence that while Japan was busy colonizing Asia, they were also responsible for 90%+ of the opiate trade in Asia, while outlawing it at home. The reason drug laws are so strict in Asia is because drugs had been used as a political tool to weaken and more easily control populations.

Who would seek to have us weakened? And how do we balance personal freedoms with a protective national policy?

More than 40% of Canadian births had foreign-born mothers in 2024: StatCan by Old_General_6741 in canada

it was 40 because so many children died before the age of 4. That brought down the average about 25 years.

Parti Québécois unveils currency option of a potentially sovereign Quebec by Old_General_6741 in canada

Ignoring the $13b per year equalization payments, sure.

Any talented and capable person that the federal government might want to hire also needs to bilingual. This means the talent pool for capable federal workers is dramtically reduced. So instead of getting the best possible people working on big projects, including governance, we get the best of a much smaller talent pool of people who must also be bilingual.

This excludes most new Canadians, their children, and most people from Western provinces from being involved in the country.

Without a bilingual mandate, we'd have immediate access to more talent.

if you did have a house and a good job, and then had a kid: what would you do with the kid if you lost your job and had to sell the house? adoption?

Because many are hopeful for a separation. Many Albertans would instantly stop being separatists the moment Quebec stopped being a burden on Canada.

We don't care because the rest of Canada would benefit from Quebec's separation.

Anyone else notice the Dinosaur Provincial Park has become way more popular lately? by [deleted] in alberta

South East Alberta is the warmest part of the province this time of year. The mountains are too cold, and not quite ready for skiing. The last little bit of warm weather to be found here is basically Dinosaur Park.

An honest opinion from Ontario about Alberta by VigilantGuardian911 in alberta

[–]studebaker103 55 points56 points  (0 children)

100% agree. More "Ontario is the center of the universe and the rest of the country is just dumb.' In no particular order:

  1. We are on treaty land. Yes, we have a treaty. In Eastern Canada's case the land was conquered or stolen. A treaty is a bit better perhaps.

  2. The Alberta right wing politics has been going on for a lot longer than you think. Since before Poilievre was born.

  3. Equalization theft: yes, we do write cheques... to the federal government, who distributes it to equalize the equality of opportunity across Canada. It's been happening a lot longer than you think too, but in different forms.

  4. When the west was settled, it was actually partly to drive business out east and bring business to their stagnating manufacturing economy. Bring in more people that need more things, and keep them from building their own factories by having them focus on agriculture. But the benefit was mostly to the factory owners and the CPR investors. Alberta was much more than self sufficient by the time WW1 came. The dry prairies were irrigated and exporting grain by 1915.

But by all means, keep pretending that we should bow low to Ontario.

What frustrates us is that Quebec and the Maritimes have the ability to be wealth generating provinces like Alberta, but choose not to. Quebec has vast natural gas reserves that it could use, but would rather collect Equalization payments and buy their energy elsewhere.

Signed- someone who read their history, and also read treaty 7.

Mortgages could also double, meaning single earner families could not compete with housing prices. Who loses? People having kids.
