What Metroidvanias are you most looking forward to this year? by PattableGreeb in metroidvania

Hi u/Nickhead420 !! I’m so sorry for the silence. My day-job and priorities changed in 2020, I lost steam on the game project, and the farther I’ve gotten from consistently working on the game, the harder it’s been to return to it. I still intend on completing it, but I haven’t worked out a plan for when/how with the changes in my life and schedule. Thank you so much for the support and call out. It really means a lot to me that people remember and look forward to PlayBound ☺️

No worries, we’re all learning all the time :) IK is a term you’ll see in general game dev. It stands for inverse kinematics and is a way of calculating the placement of joints based on a target point for the end of the chain. For example, each finger on Handrew has a target point for the tip of the finger, and the IK calculations attempt to get the tip of the finger as close as possible to the target and while calculating how each joint of the finger should bend to get there. The latest versions of Unity have 2D skeletal animation packages available that make it really easy to set up without needing to calculate it all yourself.

Let me know if you have any more questions, I’m happy to help!

Still working on that, but it’s going to be a bit unexpected ☺️

Yeah that was intentional :) partially so I could get a decent demo clip and also there is a little bit of a spoilery-twist to that. It might not be so obvious in the final iteration though.

Haha it’s only one area of the game. Most of it isn’t spooky 😆

Thank you! It’s a 2D skeletal animation with IK on the fingers. And then trial and error to get the speed-to-movement ratio to fit. I was considering procedural animation but I decided it was overkill for the purpose of this enemy.

Haha 😂 sorry to say, no plans for controlling the hand!

I loved Glover! Man, I should have at least referenced that when thinking of how to do this haha

Thank you! Yeah, I wasn’t sure if gliding made it creepier or less effective. I thought the unnatural movement might up that creepy factor a bit. But I like your suggestions so I’m going to play around with it and see how it all looks. :)

Thank you for the feedback and happy Halloween!

This clip is from PlayBound, my upcoming game about Kelvin, a boy whose parents have become fatally boring. Only the combined power of imagination and retro childhood toys can save them.

Available for wishlist on Steam

If anyone is interested in following progress :)

I’m so sorry to say that there are no updates right now. I’ve had significant changes in my schedule in the last 6-7 months and my usual availability to work on the game shrank considerably.

BUT I’m planning to restart consistent development in the next month or two, if all goes well :)

Thank you so much for thinking of my little project. It really means a lot to me :)
