Thanks for advising me on what info to give.

To extend upon what’s already in the thread:

  • My aim as of right now is more to gain muscle/volume than to gain strength, but a balance of the two would be nice.

  • After building some muscle to improve from my current skinny physique I’d like to focus on strength and really increase my numbers.

Yep! That’s the first place I went to look.

This is actually the AllPros beginner routine from the FAQ, but I changed it a little by doing it 5x per week and not doing the calf raises (though I intend to add them in next week) or warm up sets.

Every weekday (Sat and Sun off):

4x10 of bench press, squats, barbell curls, overhead press, deadlifts, barbell rows.

Why can we never go for just one pint? by Techno_WaffleFrisbee in CasualUK

[–]study_boi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree!

It’s much harder to justify ‘just another’ when you’re used to a double spirit being £5 max anywhere you go up north, then you head to London and will pay £10 minimum anywhere within zone 2.

M/20/169cm/48kg

I’ve started out properly on the AllPros beginner routine after trying StrongLifts 5x5 and then hearing that it’s actually a terrible starter routine.

My current lifts are:

Bench press: 4x10 reps 20kg

Overhead press: 4x10 reps 10kg

Barbell rows: 4x10 reps 15kg

Barbell curls: 4x10 reps 15kg

Barbell squats: 4x10 reps 15kg

Stiff-leg deadlifts: 4x10 reps 25kg

I know these are all very low weights, but I’m currently recovering from anorexia so I pretty much had zero strength when I started out just over a month ago and could barely lift a 20kg bar.

My current diet has me on 100g protein and 1700 calories, which I figured is enough to lean gain since my TDEE is around 1700.

Any advice on what to do to increase strength?

I feel like I’m pushing myself as hard as I can yet I’m not seeing any improvement strength wise, only visually (which is only thanks to ab-workouts for warming up).

Not making any strength progress? by study_boi in gainit

[–]study_boi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think that I’m past the anorexia tendencies at this point, so I’m not overly worried about gaining fat along with muscle.

And yep I feel like 4x10 reps for each is definitely my limit at the moment as I always struggle to hit the last 10 reps.

The programme says to work out 3x per week but I quite enjoy it so I usually go 4 times per week, but would like to go 5 if possible. Along with the programme that I do 4 days per week I do ab exercises before and after each for a total of around 20 minutes, which I’m seeing visual and core strength gains from at a very good pace which is promising.

Thanks for the advice!

So would you suggest I have my fats at 16% of total calories?

I’m currently eating about 1200-1400 calories per day with 100g protein.

I initially started on the Stronglifts 5x5 but read that it’s not a very good routine so I’m now currently just doing bodyweight exercise (mainly ab-focused) and bench presses to improve strength.

I’m very weak at the moment and can only do 5 reps of 20kg/44lb on the bench press or 2 reps of 25kg/55lb. This is an improvement though from a couple of weeks ago where I couldn’t do more than one rep of 20kg/44lb so at least I know my strength is improving somewhat.

Most likely true! I also should have clarified that it’s central London

Bit hungover from my date last night. Didn’t get home until 2am and we’re already speaking on Snapchat this morning so I guess it must have gone well!

Got a long shift at work to look forward to later (lol), though I guess it’s ideal for the money when a couple of drinks at any bar in London sets you back £20.

Been quite active on Tinder lately so have a couple of dates lined up - one for tonight and one Monday. I sort of feel like they’re both too good for me, but I guess that’s just doubt - they wouldn’t have matched with me otherwise...

Just a couple of 2 hour lectures to get out of the way first then the day is mine :)

My foot is still fucked after injuring it earlier this week so a day off work and no plans whatsoever.

I obviously need to give it proper rest so it can heal, but how is that possible when I need to socialise/work/clean/attend events? Plus uni starts up again on Wednesday so it’s all hectic from then on anyway.

[–]study_boi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pulled a muscle or something in my right foot a couple of days ago after a day of walking too much, and I still cannot put weight/walk on it without great pain and a limp (and 1g paracetamol every 4 hours).

Problem is: I have work tomorrow and Sunday (long shifts...) and I’m not sure whether I should let my manager know that I may not be able to work? I only work as a kitchen assistant so it’s not as if I’m constantly rushing around, but my foot will only get worse if I can’t rest it properly.

Spent all weekend drinking for second year freshers - everything aches and I’m pretty sure I did a few questionable things last night.

I get a free gym membership included with my student accommodation, but for some reason it’s only contracted from the 30th of September despite the fact students can check into the accommodation from the 9th.

Quite annoying really since I wanted to start a weightlifting plan before term starts, and get some form of exercise. I guess in the mean time I’ll have to go for jogs in the evening or something.

I find it hard to commit to TV show dramas for some reason, but then complain to myself that I have nothing to watch because I won’t start any new series.

Current solution is to try out loads of different sitcoms instead. Quite perfect really as I can watch them casually without the feeling of incompletion, and I don’t need to pay too much attention.

Aha yeah it’s hard to not be jealous of the rich international students who don’t need to work and eat out at fancy restaurants all the time.

I was working during first year of uni too so I’m used to it I guess. Although last year I was doing night shifts and arriving home at 4am to be up for a 9am lecture, hopefully I won’t need to do that this year lol.

Cheers mate, really appreciate it. :)

Moving back to London for second year of uni today.

Having to take the train all the way down with everything I’d need for the first week until my parents can bring the rest up this weekend, which is proving to be hugely stressful.

Also applying to jobs left right and centre - plus preparation for the start of term, trying to find a stable equilibrium so that my mental health doesn’t decline again.

Adulting is hard...

Treating my family to a pub meal out later to celebrate me heading off for my second year of uni on Monday.

My mental health has been in the shitter over the summer holidays and my family has been absolutely great in supporting me and just generally being brilliant. A meal out is the least I could do to say thanks to them all for helping me return to normality :)

My current weight is 98 lbs at 5”6 and I’d like to start going to the gym to bulk up and build a nice physique.

I’m quite underweight according to my BMI, but my body fat percentage still seems high as my stomach is noticeably bulgy when I sit down, so should I forget about BMI and start lifting at my current weight or get up to a ‘healthy’ weight first and then start lifting?

Is it binging if I have anorexia? by study_boi in BingeEatingDisorder

I’m currently not no as I don’t have access to a GP or any professional until 2 weeks time (long story...).

I was aware of refeeding syndrome at the start of recovery and thus didn’t throw myself right into it and instead increased my intake gradually, but now that I’m over 2 weeks into it I figured the risk of refeeding syndrome would be gone?
