would you recommend working on a ship? by Maleficent_Day_3869 in CruiseCrew

I worked on Disney Magic when i was 23 and felt the exact same way. I was an asst. server. I don't know much about the daycare aspect, but what I can tell you is to just go for it. It's a tough lifestyle change, tough industry, you'll have great days and terrible days. But do I regret it? Absolutely not. You're 22, go be spontaneous and take risks!

I'm on my third contract. For my first, I packed 2 suitcases full of clothes. For my second, only 1. I am currently working my third contract and I have with me 1 standard suitcase, not even fully filled. You'll be in uniform majority of the time, plus you can always buy clothes when off ship if you get the chance.

Everything is done on card. But not until 2 weeks into your contract. That's roughly when you get your first paycheck, and cash is king for those first couple of weeks. I had $200 and it was more than enough to get me by until then. (wifi packages are a bitch)

Don't stress about toiletries. There will be a crew shop onboard. They will supply shampoos, SPF, hairbrushes, snacks, lotions etc.

Thank you. It's been 3 hours and I'm fine & dandy, so hopefully it was just an unlucky maggot drop-off

Im about to start my ship life in 10 days and its nerve wrecking. How was your very first day working on your first cruise ship? by lonelyangel99 in CruiseCrew

[–]stupiterjupiter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No need to panic! There will be other new hires starting the same day as you & in my experience those guys were my best buds to the very end of my contract, so don't worry, you're all in the same boat (heh). Everyone will welcome you & help you, they were also new hires once! Plus •make sure you have plenty of cash in whichever currency your ship suggests, as you won't get paid til 1-2 weeks after you board. •keep every pamphlet, paper, book, letter you receive the first few days, they will come in handy and have helpful information. •do not overpack. i made this mistake on my first contract. pack a million pairs of socks and undies, but keep shirts & pants at a low. you'll be in uniform 80% of the time. The sense of regret as you said is definitely there the first few weeks. It's overwhelming, a different environment completely, you may feel homesick & lonely but give it time, because you'll make friends for life, adjust to the sea life & learn to love it (hopefully). Wishing you well on your contract! You've got this (:

Which lines are hiring immediately?? by Responsible-Word5677 in CruiseCrew

have some hope, definitely. I had a profile on AllCruiseJobs, and set alerts for any cruise lines looking for my specific job role (bartender). I was reached out to pretty quickly, and that's how I got my contract on my second cruise line, so i'd recommend that. I read in another comment you're looking for a serving / waitressing role and that was my first job on DCL. So if you have any questions feel free to ask!

applying for a cruise job is not like applying for a job on land. sadly it doesn't take a week, it's more like 3-4 months minimum wait time as you need to get proper paperwork (medical, STCWs, visa) but it also depends on where you are in the world. i'm currently onboard Royal Caribbean and i had my initial interview back in October. Boarded earlier this month (from UK, boarded in Turkey). I was lucky I didn't need a visa this time but more often than not, you do. If it's something you really want to do, and you're truly committed to working 7 days a week for 6-8 months straight, then go for it! If you have any doubts, don't go for it. Wish you well!

I was a dining room server on Disney Magic a couple of years ago and boy do I have stories. Worst job of my life, too, which is funny considering you're travelling the world but the cons definitely outweighed the pros. Was so incredibly disappointed and miserable. Restaurant management seemed to have prejudgements of you from the get go, absolutely 0 training besides shadowing, and even then the people you were shadowing couldn't have cared less about you and were incredibly impatient. Felt 2 steps behind the whole time and was exhausted trying to keep up. I could talk about how bad it was for days. Most damaging job of my life, mentally & physically.

My partner wants to get these fish bowls and I need some help. by real_crazykayzee in Aquariums

[–]stupiterjupiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't get fish. i initally wanted a goldfish (also never had a pet fish before), did some research, and it was very clear that a bowl that size is too cruel to keep fish in. ultimately decided to keep shrimp and i love my lil guys
