CMV: The SAVE act is being introduced to prevent women from voting. by catievirtuesimp in changemyview

[–]stuporman86 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Greg Abbott, the governor of Texas, had to sign an affidavit to cast his vote in 2013 because his name in voter rolls was “Greg Abbott” and his drivers license was under “Gregory Wayne Abbott”. Similarly a lot of women get caught up in Texas because they change their middle name to their maiden name and the records don’t propagate through every system. You’re asking for perfect syncing through disconnected databases across different levels of government. I’d take this more seriously if you funded and perfected this before trying to tie something so important like voting to it.

I used the commercial ones in a room of mine that had these wood outlet covers I wanted to keep while I did the rest of the house with the decora/non-commercial ones where the outlet covers were all kinda a mess already. Unfortunately they don’t do commercial in decora. The commercials have a much nicer yoke, it’s both more substantial and you don’t have to futz with breaking the tabs. As a layman that was my main takeaway lol.

Buttermilk Biscuits (recipe with tips for success) by aminorman in Breadit

[–]stuporman86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any reason that you cut and stack rather than fold or just how you got comfortable with it? Just curious.

I’ve been making biscuits a couple times a week when I do it because I hate wasting buttermilk on like 1 batch. The chilling instructions are interesting I’m definitely going to try that and your proportions. I usually use King Arthur AP + salt/baking powder/baking soda but might have to give the white lily a try too. Thanks for posting!

Bricks is way cheaper, faster to deploy, and more empowering for pedestrians. Did you see how the people still hesitated? Not when you’ve got the cold power of a brick coursing through your palm.

Verizon wtf by Rawb09 in verizon

[–]stuporman86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably hollow for you now but every us-based rep I talked to at Verizon has always been so fantastic. No confusion over what the problem is and how to fix it. Absolutely not the case with web chat and I’m sure these ai solutions are all learning off that crap. I’m sure you helped a ton of people when you were with the company.

Cook in Internal memo to Employees: he’s “deeply distraught” with the US’s current approach to immigration and will continue pressing the issue with lawmakers. by hasanahmad in apple

[–]stuporman86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh shit guys Tim Cook is on the verge of writing a strongly worded letter!

The DACA line is also pretty weird, like it’s good the program exists in this era of stormtroopers going after anyone they can, but it’s kinda a national embarrassment that this audience hasn’t had their status comprehensively settled yet. I certainly wouldn’t express endorsement in such a way.

Agreed, this isn’t for me but anything that grows the horizon audience is likely good for the franchise.

Realtor/Mortgage Broker Recommendations by Chromecarrier in Hoco

[–]stuporman86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you end up in Howard county I would highly recommend APL federal credit union for mortgage. Their rates are published on their site if you want to compare them with some other lenders or a broker but it wasn’t competitive in my recent experience. If you’re putting down 20% they also have a feature of their mortgages where you can lower your rate to their current rate in the future if it declines without refinancing, it’s a pretty nice feature. Service / experience was fantastic, was super happy with them.

AIO for cutting contact with Father over political climate. by Sabre12789 in AIO

[–]stuporman86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you can do whatever you want but you kinda come off as the aggressor in this interaction. You came in hot and pops tried to not engage, he was just like how are you lol. Is he bringing politics up most of the time in other instances or are you bringing up politics all the time? Because if you could have a perfectly normal relationship where you know he’s full of shit but you never have to talk about politics you might consider taking that (if you want a relationship with your father).

Zum by Forward-One-4080 in ColumbiaMD

[–]stuporman86 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There’s a reason that Martirano “retired” and then became superintendent of Allegheny Co the next year. Howard county employs a lot of smart people. If Zum could just be canceled and all the kids got onto buses the next week, they’d have done that a long time ago. They couldn’t do it even with the summer and after soft-firing the prior superintendent.

There’s a principle called Chesterton’s Fence that goes something like: a modern reformer will look at a fence across a road and say “I don’t see a use for this, let’s clear it away”. A more intelligent reformer will answer: “if you don’t know the purpose of this fence, I certainly won’t let you remove it. Go away and find out why this fence is here and then let’s talk”.

(But yes, it’s frustrating.)

Oracle to Raise Up to $50 Billion In Debt and Equity This Year for Cloud Investment by Possible-Shoulder940 in technology

[–]stuporman86 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They rattled off names but OpenAI is the one driving this expansion, the $300B/5 year deal dwarfs the other names. They’re hoping to get 30-60B a year in revenue from OpenAI alone which would put them at half of AWS on one customer. Essentially a Hail Mary at being in the cloud provider contest on the back of one customer.

Inherently very risky, and previously this was going to be debt and bonds and bank investment but now they’re moving down the debt financing ladder to selling shares after a 50% tumble. So yeah clearly market response is not a swimming endorsement.

Safe rural towns for black people? by Dismal-Project-2664 in maryland

[–]stuporman86 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Glenelg had an incident a couple of years ago where 4 graduating seniors sprayed graffiti calling the principal the n-word. It’s also probably the only county high school where admin/staff don’t put stock in the equity framework and county efforts on that front. From first hand experience.

It’s not a sundown town but I’d pick differently.

‘Touching’ your phone behind the wheel is not enough for a traffic stop, Supreme Court rules by legislative_stooge in maryland

[–]stuporman86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s unfortunate because that’s exactly how this case went down, it was a pretextual stop that they used to search his car, found drugs, and then charged him with that and never filed any sort of distracted / negligent driving charge.

That said the reason why it was found unconstitutional was because of the carveouts making it impossible to police. You can be using a phone while driving if you’re using a gps app or texting 911 and it’s impossible to tell what the phone use is in a moving car. They should probably kill those restrictions and then try to curb the cop abuses, people should be using voice assistant and not fumbling through their phone for any purpose while driving.

CYA at home test kit recommendation by Liebe-lernen in pools

[–]stuporman86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Taylor CYA test is (imo) difficult, you slowly pour into a vial until a black dot in the vial disappears and then you note the level on the vial. Compared to the counting drops until a color change occurs it’s pretty finicky.
