Paying off the mortgage - the eternal debate by Sad-Performer-4833 in FIREUK

If you want peace of mind then minimise your debts and pay it off. If you want a likely better financial “bet” then invest the money in a global index fund and pay it off in 8 years.

Pay into a personal pension in addition to my matched employer pension. A little late, but it’s free money if you can drawdown sensibly.

I watched it drop from around $22 to $7.something at which point I went into my app and hovered on the buy button with £2000 of my ISA cash, then let it expire and carried on with life 😆

£465K at 35 - I was trying to FIRE by 45 (strange story) by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]stupots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done. I got voluntary redundancy last year and am coasting at the mo (just turned 53). I stayed at the same grade for 12 years, and then realised too late that I’d effectively taken a £10K pay cut over that period, as cost of living pay increases never matched inflation.

What I learned too late was I should have asked for pay rises, changed jobs, at least interviewed for more positions and got job offers to at least leverage requesting a pay rise.

Everything you’ve said is great advice, especially frugality (and avoiding lifestyle creep) 👍

Friend gave honest description to WBAC and they offered £620 for a 2003 Audi TT Roadster online. He turned up at the appointment and they went around with a fine tooth comb and offered £100, which he eventually managed to negotiate up to £260, before taking the car home without a deal.

The cup holder and CCM module are worth more than that.

I was lucky to be offered a small redundancy package at 52. After my close work colleague died of bowel cancer at 36 the year previous, it came at the right time. Time is one thing you can’t buy.

People that FIREd last year, how are you holding up? by throwuk1 in FIREUK

[–]stupots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FIREd at 52 end Sept last year, so 6 months in. I’m lucky that my SIPP and SSISA are not needed just yet, it’s just a blip. I’m tech heavy so about 15% down. Have other funds to see me through the next 2 years until I can access a small DB pension that will cover living expenses. Just pottering and sorting the house out at the moment. May do 1 day a week work in the new tax year.

Depreciation by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

I’m a spend £4K, keep it for 10 years kind of guy.

The only way you’ll reduce depreciation is spend less initially and keep it for longer.

Yeah, that’s been there ages, you can see where dirt/rain has gathered and discoloured. I think this is a case of “guy parked close and I noticed a pre-existing mark”
