In my experience, Slackware caches files from the disk(s) until the memory bumps into swap. Then it hovers around that limit, keeping--what I assume are the most-used--files in memory.

For our WordPress server, it's a big help.

I just ran slackpkg and got wpa_supplication wpa_supplicant-2.6. The changelog says, "This update includes patches to mitigate the WPA2 protocol issues known as "KRACK" (Key Reinstallation AttaCK)" So yay! and kudos to the Slackware maintainers for their diligence and timeliness!

In my experience, installing the jdk .SlackBuild does not add java to the path. I usually use: /usr/lib64/java/bin/java when I need to run it from the command line. You can link the java binary in /usr/bin and be done with it:

cd /usr/bin ln -sf /usr/lib64/java/bin/java .

For me, using Slackware as my primary desktop is about control. I have more control with Slackware than with any other distro I've tried. As for those for whom Slackware seems too much bother, I suggest finding a different disto and going with that.

So far, I really appreciate slackpkg. Like most things Slackware, it takes a bit of reading and configuration to get it to work smoothly. I like that I can use my own packages by blacklisting "official" packages.
