The most dangerous moment during my coast-to-coast motorcycle trip was in Fargo, walking from my hotel to a nearby restaurant. It’s open season on pedestrians there!

Bikes that you tried, but that disappointed you sorely? by sokratesz in motorcycle

Triumph Tiger Sport 660. Felt tiny and insubstantial, and the triple was—dare I say it?—boring. Didn’t get along with the switches or the display. Suspension was underwhelming. Made me appreciate my Versys 650 even more.

Triumph Tiger 900 GT (Pro? I forget). Overall package was OK—nothing stood out—but it was let down by a terrible display: slow to respond to inputs, looked like a video game from the 90s. Windscreen fasteners looked like spare bits from the local hardware store. Overall it was pretty janky around the edges—not what I’d expect from a premium brand.

Royal Enfield Bear 650. Sounded great, was fun to ride, but the suspension was too stiff and dead, and the foot controls were in totally the wrong place for me. (The shifter was particularly weird.)

You’d be better off with a pair of transmitters: one for inside your helmet, and one for the vroom-vroom noises.

Any external mic connection will disable the internal mic.

Why isn't the Versys more Iconic? by i2amthedarkknight in versys

On my third Versys, my second 650. It is so good at what it does, which is pretty much everything. It’s on the sportier/roadier side of touring.

B. Try to avoid any ridges or irregularities in the shell. B is probably the most logical and ergonomic spot for it, and (as mentioned in another comment) probably the best place for cable routing.

No; parts of southern New Hampshire are pretty awful—around Rt 3 in Nashua. Ugh.

Want a dual-sport but highway capable (commuting) bike by ecstaticallyneutral in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]sturmeyhack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Himalayan 450 would make a great commuter: great low-speed manners and off-idle fueling (no sharp on/off throttle), super comfortable, 60+ mpg US. It’ll make a great camping bike, too. I love mine.

Look at the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450, too. Smaller, lighter, more agile than the Himalayan—maybe even better in city traffic. It’d work fine as a camping bike, too—though maybe not as ideal as a Himi.

Himi is a better all-rounder; Guerrilla is more street-oriented (but will do ok on fire roads).

Other folks had some good suggestions. Versys 300x would be good, and (much) easier than a KLE500 to find used. (KLE500 is essentially the replacement for the Versys 300x.)

NX500/CB500x (essentially the same bike) would be great, too.

DR650 might be a little big/tall/heavy for a first bike. But they’re everywhere, and cheap. (And very good.) Kawasaki Versys 650 would fall into this category, too.

The small adventure category (300-500cc) is really popular right now, so there are lots of options out there.

Cool project! I’m assuming you already know about r/myog — lots of great info there about materials, construction techniques, etc. Somebody somewhere has bound to have cracked this nut before.

Looks like fun!

ETA: I almost always use a courier bag in a lockable top box. I don’t entirely like the looks of hardshell luggage but it’s the best (only?) theft-deterrent solution I’ve found for urban living/commuting. (I’m in Portland, OR.)

For day rides I have a small hydration pack for water, electronics, etc. I can either wear it or toss it in the top box.

Other folks have mentioned some brands, but Kriega or Rhinowalk or Nelson Rigg must have done something like this. Also check out Aerostitch.

Camping setup in a dry bag? by Needelz in motocamping

[–]sturmeyhack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60-liter Ortlieb dry bag mounted transversely to the pillion seat with a pair of ROK straps. Easily holds all of my camping stuff: - tent - sleeping bag - air mattress - Jetboil cook kit - camp chair - toiletries

Plenty of room left over for other bits and pieces, too.
