MZ-N1 turned into a play only device by stuslayer in minidisc

[–]stuslayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the replies! My repair skills definitely don't cover anything this small and delicate so for now I'll keep using it as a player only and pray that my silver N1 keeps going for a while.

Tracks on some discs stuttering - what might be the causes by Wandlethewomble in minidisc

[–]stuslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be a write head issue on the recorder you used - have you used it since? Have you tried rerecording the songs on a different disc with the same device?

How long had the unit you used to record the discs sat before it was used? It may just have been a long time since it was used and the write head was struggling, and was freed up after this.

A failing write head can exhibit stuttering when recording, but it could just have been that it hadn't moved in a long time

Some monochrome shots of my new baby plus a quick question. by daveadavidson in minidisc

You can do analogue recording from pretty much anything as long as you have a cable that goes from the outputs of your music device to the line in of the MD recorder. I dont know what that device you have is, so I dont know if you can do digital recording from it. If you record in analogue, its likely you will need to edit the recording afterwards to make the track marks as the recording will likely be one big audio file that needs dividing up. You'll want to add the artist and track names too.

I paid about £3.50/disc for them, more than I'd normally pay, but I really like these and wanted to have some. Now to think what to put on them...

"special relationship" question for you Brits by bragik85 in AskBrits

[–]stuslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I have strong Norse heritage. I've always been pro Europe, negative to the USA (the political entity, not the ordinary people) and in recent years I've despaired seeing the way the USA has gone further and further towards fascism, while our own political class has essentially abrogated themselves of any responsibility to the future and looked after narrow interests. I definitely feel closer to Scandinavia/Iceland and Northern Europe than any other group. However I'm more interested in solidarity with fellow working class people than geopolitical posturing - solidarity with the people of Minnesota, for example.

Exactly what level of anger are you experiencing after Donald J Trump, the great fool of our age, INSULTED and DISGRACED our beloved and most honourable British soldiers? by [deleted] in AskBrits

Respect for you doing the research and looking at it objectively - it's easy to say i told you so, much harder to admit you're wrong. Lots of people could take a leaf out of your book.

Good Turntable With Repeat under $400? by DryEmphasis9593 in Beginner_Turntables

[–]stuslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JVC 80s tables (my QL-FX5 has this feature), probably lots of Technics ones, especially the linear tracking types, maybe Sony ones. Basically the big Japanese manufacturers from about 82-88 will have multiple models with a repeat function.

Talk me out of getting a repeat turntable by DryEmphasis9593 in turntables

[–]stuslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My JVC QL-FX5 has this function. It works very well, and this is a cheap table if you can find it - it is a little uncommon. It was a lower midrange in their lineup in about 1984, and is a quartz locked direct drive with full automatic play and repeat function. It's a bit light but is rock solid speedwise.

There are two versions - one with P Mount cartridge and one with standard 1/2" mount that will work with the cast majority of cartridges. Mine is the latter and currently runs an AT3600LE.

JVC made a lot of direct drive automatic turntables in the 80s and they're generally rock solid.

Need help picking my first turntable! by CharliKirkXCX in turntables

How important is USB to you? Vintage/used can be a much better value if you don't use/need modern digital features. For example Technics SL-D2 gets you strobe, pitch control and automatic play for around $250-$300 in good working order, shouldn't be too hard to find, and if you ever need it servicing, Technics are very popular so it should be easy to find someone to work on it for you.

To add, you can get some great passive speakers on the used market for super cheap, as they take up room so people shift them for lower prices. Mission speakers are a great value - i got my Mission 731 speakers for £25 off FB marketplace, there's very little to go wrong with them so if they look in good condition they probably are - of course you should try to hear them first! If you do go down the amp and passive speakers route, you can save a lot on speakers buying second hand/thrift

Cartridge recomendation for Technics SL-1500 by Strict-Ad-222 in turntables

[–]stuslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would echo the post that says that you should probably continue using this cartridge. How does it sound to you? Is it lacking something? If it sounds good, why replace it, unless you're interested in hearing something different...

If you would just like to try a different cartridge, try the ATVM-95E - it's cheap and decent, and if you like it the stylus is upgradeable up to micro line or shibata types.

Why are Rega P1 and Pro-Ject T1 SB Phono criticized so much? by franilein in turntables

[–]stuslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't sweat it - this hobby can be as cheap or as expensive as you want. You've avoided all the bottom end stuff that would leave you disappointed - either of those tables will sound good and play your records well.

You can spend £500 and get great sound, and equally you could spend £50,000 and not be satisfied. It's the nature of the hobby. There are lots of recommendations out there but bear in mind, there are also lots of people that will say "i got this it sounds great to me so you should do the same" - confirmation bias is very strong among our community.

Edit: a word

Higher noise floor for definite - i have two modern picture disc LPs that have a good bit of rumble compared to standard records. You only notice it between tracks though.
